Jefferson County recognizes 4-H Week
BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County commissioners proclaimed the week of March 12-18 as Pennsylvania 4-H Week at their meeting on Tuesday.
Amanda Kanouff, 4-H Extension educator, youth development, said all 67 Pennsylvania counties will be approving a proclamation of this type.
“We reached approximately 150 youth last year here in Jefferson County,” Kanouff said, “which does not include the 300-plus youth that we reached with our Safety Day program, in cooperation with Progressive Agriculture, and we’re already looking to exceed that amount this year with future programs and current memberships.”
Kanouff said they’re excited to see 4-H grow in Jefferson County.
“We couldn’t do that without the support of our commissioners, so thanks very much for that,” she said.
The Penn State Extension Office, which runs 4-H, is located in Brookville on the third floor of the Parker P. Blood building, 186 Main Street.
“You can come upstairs and visit with us,” Kanouff said.

“Mainly in the county we do livestock, horse, STEM, cooking and sewing,” Kanouff said. “This year, with the Department of Agriculture canceling poultry for this year, we’ll still have displays so that we’ll have a poultry component; we will not have live birds at the fair.”
4-H traces its lineage to growing and canning clubs that were formed across rural America in the late 1800s.
By the turn of the century, 4-H had emerged as the youth education arm of the fledgling state agricultural extension agencies.
Pennsylvania welcomed its first club to Mercer County in 1912 with the mission of instructing local rural youth in improved farming and homemaking practices.
In other business, the commissioners approved:
• Invoices in the amount of $943,661.88 for the period of Feb. 11 through Feb. 24.
• The actual gross payroll in the amount of $278,847.63 for payment for the period Jan. 29 through Feb. 11,2023.
• A second letter of amendment to the consultant agreement dated March 8, 2022, between Jefferson County and Delta Development Group. This will extend the agreement for an additional period of six months.
The county also announced that petition packets are available for pickup for those interested in running for a local or county-wide office.
The first day to circulate petitions was Feb. 14, and the last day to file petitions is March 7.
The next commissioners meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at Jefferson Place.
