Donovan Mitchell made six 3-pointers for 25 points, Ray Spalding added 18 points with 11 rebounds and No. 7 Louisville shot 57 percent to pull away for an 88-68 victory over Syracuse on Sunday.

Seeking a second-place tie with Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Cardinals rode a 14-4 run entering the break for a 15-point lead that grew to 23 early in the second half. That provided a buffer against shaky play Syracuse used to get within 11 but never closer as Louisville (23-6, 11-5) rebounded from its loss at No. 8 North Carolina.

Mitchell shot 9 of 16 from the field to lead four Cardinals in double figures. A revamped starting frontcourt featuring Spalding helped as the sophomore forward tied a career high in points while posting his second career double-double.

Deng Adel had 17 points and Quentin Snider 12 for Louisville.

Tyus Battle had 20 points and Tyler Lydon 17 for Syracuse (17-13, 9-8), which had sought a follow-up to its buzzer-beating win over No. 10 Duke.

BIG PICTURE

Syracuse: Despite entering with a 3-2 record against Top 10 schools — including Wednesday’s nail-biter against the Blue Devils — the Orange’s tournament hopes had no room for error. They managed just 36 percent shooting, were outrebounded 39-28 and committed 10 of their 16 turnovers in the first half.

Louisville: The Cardinals had plenty of room for improvement after TAMPA, FLA. >> The head of the baseball players’ union says “that page has been turned” in the spat regarding New York Yankees President Randy Levine and what he said about reliever Dellin Betances’ agents.

Levine had called Betances a victim of “overthe-top demands based on very little sense of reality” by his representatives at an arbitration hearing on Feb 18. The Yankees beat Betances in the case, and he will be paid $3 million rather than his $5 million request.

“Dellin is focused in on the season, we’re focused in on the season and look forward to have him continue to do what he’s always done, which has been a tremendous contributor to his club and winning on the field,” union chief Tony Clark said Sunday.

Clark talked with Yankees players as part of his annual visit to spring training camps in Florida and Syracuse’s Tyler Lydon (20) works for position against Louisville’s Anas Mahmoud (14) during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game, Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, in Louisville, Ky.

Levine, one day after the decision was announced, said he felt bad that Betances “was used that way by his agents.”

Clark said he has not talked with Levine about the matter.

But the expected experiment to automatically place a runner on second base to start extra innings in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League and Arizona League this summer will have a tough time reaching the big leagues.

“So far the feedback that we have gotten is just that it will be a challenge to have it happen here,” Clark said. “The feedback that we have gotten is been pretty definitive with respect to that rule.”
