Walter Nystoriak
COHOES – Walter riak, 89, a life-long resident of Cohoes, died on Friday, March 10,2017 at Sam arifollow brief tan Hospital in Troy in ga illness.
Born in Cohoes on June 2, 1927, Walter was the son of the late Theodore and Julia Haschytz Nystoand riak. He was raised educated in Cohoes and was employed by the NYS Department of Labor from 1945 until his enlistment into the Army in 1950. He served his country from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War, in Korea, and for his service was awarded the Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal and the American Occupation Medal. At the conclusion of his enlistment, Walter returned home to Cohoes and to his job with the State. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he had been employed for a total of 38 years with the Labor Department and for one year with the Department of Corrections at Auburn State Prison.
Walter was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church in Maplewood, the Watervliet “R” Club (FROC), Maplewood Amerenforican Legion Post #1615 and the Cohoes Loyal Order of Moose #1332. Walter joyed golf, bowling and fishing. He founded the Department of Labor Golf League, in 1958, at the mer Stanford Golf Course. Later, the league relocated to the Western Turnpike Golf Course in GuilderMaLake. land. He enjoyed league bowling with the “R” Club in Watervliet and the plewood Volunteer Fire Department and fishing at Saratoga
