LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. » First-team All-MAAC star Jackie Benitez has been granted her release from Siena, an athletic department spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.

The sophomore guard lead the Saints in scoring at 16.6 points per game, and was a staunch defensive presence as well. It is unclear where she intends to continue her college career.

Siena had not released an official statement with comment from head coach Ali Jaques as of press time on Wednesday evening.

Benitez was a hot and cold player for Siena this season. She struggled to shoot during a 2-10 stretch in the early part of the season, but clearly had potential. She posted her best game of year on Jan. 12 when she scored 34 points against Monmouth at the Times Union Center.

“We thank Jackie for the con-

tributions that she made to our program over the past two years, and wish her the best with her future plans,” said head coach Ali Jaques.

She was 3- of-12 from the field and didn’t even take a 3-point shot in the 67- 47 season- ending loss to Iona in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament.

Per NCAA transfer rules, Benitez will have to sit out next season if she attends a Division I school.
