La Salle, Troy baseball earn opening wins

SCHALMONT, N.Y.>> After being stymied in their season opener, the La Salle bats woke up during a six-run fourth inning Wednesday afternoon. The result was a 13-1 victory over Schalmont in the Colonial Council opener for both teams.

Cole Carey had two singles, a double and three RBIs while Tim Carroll contribute­d three singles.

Christian Brennan picked up the win on the mound for the Cadets with three hits allowed and five strikeouts in six innings. Joe Natale finished the game for La

Salle (1- 0, 1-1).

HOOSIC VALLEY 4, GREENWICH 3 (9) >> Dale Maxon provided the key hit in the bottom of the ninth inning for Valley in a walkof Wasaren League win. Jon Colligan pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the hosts to pick up the win. Cole Burgess led Greenwich with four singles while Bailey Winch took the loss after entering the game in relief during the sixth inning. TROY 2, BETHLEHEM 0 >> Pitchers Michael Hughes and Isaac Brown combined for a three-hit shutout vs. Bethlehem. Kyle Locklear had two hits and John Germinerio drove in a runs as the Troy offense scored in the second and sixth innings to pick up the win. AMSTERDAM 13, SOUTH GLENS FALLS 5 >> Matt Steves hit a double and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs but the Rams jumped out to a 13-1 lead and coasted to a Foothills Council win.

Softball

GREENWICH 5, HOOSIC VALLEY2>> Rachel Hall twirled a complete game three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Witches. Hall added three singles and two RBIs at the plate while teammates Sabrina Whitehouse hit a home run and Courtney Fraher contribute­d a double.

SCHALMONT 7, SCHUYLERVI­LLE 6 >> Caitlin Kelleher went 2-for- 4 with a home run while Hunter VanArnum went 2- for- 4 for Schuylervi­lle in the nonleague season opener for both teams. Erin Mahar earned the win for Schalmont while Lauren Kelleher took the loss.

CHATHAM 4, MAPLE HILL 1 >> Arianna Papas went 3-for-3 for Maple Hill but Chatham pitcher Jenna Skype allowed just one run on five hits in the contest. Alysa Houghtalin­g took the loss for the Wildcats with a complete game five hitter with six walks and seven strikeouts. LOUDONVILL­E CHRISTIAN 16, DOANE STUART 1 >> Jasmine Mullally pitched a copmlete game two hitter with two singles to earn the win in the circle for Loudonvill­e. Kennedy Litchfield contribute­d a single, a double and an RPI on offense.

Boys lacrosse

NISKAYUNA 16, BALLSTON SPA7>> The Silver Warriors took a 10- 4 lead at the half and extended the lead the rests of the way. Michael Doxie had a hat trick and three assists for Niskayuna while Tyler Gregory scored four goals.

Sam Swingruber led the Scotties with four goals while goalkeeper James Nash made a game-high 12 saves.

Boys tennis

SARATOGA SPRINGS 8, MOHONASEN 1 >> David Maher defeated David Romano 6- 0, 6- 4 in first singles for the Warriors’ lone point. The Blue streaks swept the rest of the matches thanks to singles wins by Seungmin Kim, Nicholas Grosso, Youngsuk Lee, Edward Towers and Luke DeRizzo in which Mohoasen players did not take a single game. SCHENECTAD­Y 7, TROY 2 >> Schenectad­y won all six singles matches while Troy High earned wins in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. ALBANY ACADEMY 7, LA SALLE 0 >> Connor O’Brien beat Aaron Fang 6-0, 6-0 in first singles to set the tone for a boys tennis shutout. COLONIE 9, TROY 0 >> Muhammad Azhar topped Andrew Ridler 6-1, 6- 0 at No. 1 as Colonie shut out Troy.

SHAKER5, AVERILLPAR­K4>> Shaker’s Noah Massry won a tight match at No. 6 singles 7- 6(3), 6-3 to help the Blue Bison edge the Warriors.

BURNT HILLS- BALLSTON LAKE 8, SHENENDEHO­WA 1 >> Ryan Vullo led the Spartans at first singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Shen’s Jonathan Frutschy in a Suburban Council contest.

Track and field

AVERILL PARK BOYS, GIRLS SWEEP >> Alana Carroll won the 100 hurdles and the pole vault for Averill Park girls track and field to help the Warriors to victories over Albany and Troy High. Sarah Manfred won the shot put and discus for Averill Park.

On the boys side, Jamie Cocca won the shot put and discus while Christian Nash won the 100 meter dash for Averill Park in two wins. Troy High dropped both contests as a team but Isaiah Burdette won the long jump and triple jump, Joe Casale won the high jump, and Finn Jacobsen- Schulte won the 1,600 and 800 meter runs for the Flying Horses.

ALBANY ACADEMY BOYS, COHOES GIRLS WIN TRIMEET >> The AA boys track team beat Choes 88-35 and Landingbur­gh 97- 43 in

a Colonial Council meet. Lansingbur­gh topped Cohoes 72-59.

On the girls side, Cohoes edged Albany Academy for Girls 70- 67 and beat Lansingbur­gh 96.5-21.5. Full named for event winners were not provided. SCHENECTAD­Y, MOHONASEN, BALLSTON SPA SPLIT>> Ballston Spa’s girls team edged Schenectad­y 87- 86, Schenectad­y tied Mohonasen 88-88 and Mohonasen beat Ballston Spa 94- 86 in on of the most closely contested track meets possible.

Ballston Spa’s Faith DeMars won the 3,000 and the 1,500 while Scotties teammate Eamma Reardon placed first in the high jump.

Schenectad­y topped all schools on the boys side but Ballston Spa’s Eli Washington won the shot put and the discus and Tim Dwyer won the 800 and 1,600.

Boys lacrosse

SHAKER 24, AVERILL PARK 3 >> Luke Julian recorded a hat trick and provided five assists while Blue Bison teammate Colin Sorary had two goals and five assists and Jack Cheney tallied six goals and one assist.

Oliver Clayton had two goals for Averill Park in defeat.

GUILDERLAN­D 9, CBA 6 >> Trevor Long scored four goals and added an assist for the Dutchmen in the season opener for both teams. Nolan Aery recorded a hat trick for the Brothers while Darrian Poole and Max Tedesco combined for 13 saves in goal.

Girls lacrosse

COLUMBIA 16, ALBANY 5 >> Caroline Hirt scored two goals and had three assists in the Suburban Council victory. Molly Tesoriero, Ashley Murtagh and Ciara Mazzone each recorded hat tricks for the Blue Devils. Laura Bulmer led Albany with two goals. NISKAYUNA 17, BALLSTON SPA 0 >> Erin Doyle scored six goals for the Silver Warriors in the win. Scotties goalie Gia Burdick made a game-high eight saves.

College softball

SAGE 5-17, COBLESKILL 1-3 >> Mechanicvi­lle grad Allison Ford tossed a complete game in the circle for Sage in the Game 1 win. She scattered five with 10 strikeouts. Ford is now 6- 4 on the season after allowing just one earned run in the contest. Ballston Spa

grad Katy Rimawi went 1-for- 3 with two RBIs in the victory.

UALBANY 9-5, CORNELL 0-1 >> UAlbany tallied up 18 hits in Wednesday’s doublehead­er to beat Cornell 9- 0 and 5-1. With the wins, the Great Danes improved their record to 15-9 on the season.

“All of our pitchers did a really nice job combining to hold Cornell to just one run on the day. When we did make a mistake defensivel­y, the pitchers picked us up,” said coach Chris Cannata.

Bailey Turner (5- 4) earned the win in the first game holding Cornell to two hits. Switching it up in the second, Celeste Verdolivo (5- 4) took the win striking out four batters and allowing only one hit.

SIENA TO HOST ALBANY DUTCHMEN >> The Siena College Baseball Field will serve as the new home for the Albany Dutchmen for the summer collegiate baseball team’s 2017 season. The Dutchmen are scheduled to make their Siena Field home debut on June 3 vs. the Mohawk Valley DiamondDaw­gs.

“We are excited to welcome the Albany Dutchmen to Siena Field,” said Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D’Argenio. “We feel that the recent upgrades made have transforme­d our field into an outstandin­g Northeast college facility, and one in which the players will enjoy. We look forward to hosting the future baseball stars of tomorrow as they showcase their talents in a fun, family friendly atmosphere at the center of the Siena College campus.”

The Dutchmen are members of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, a 13-team summer collegiate baseball league located in Upstate New York.

UTICA8, SAGE1>> Troy High grad Christian Rosario had the lone win for Sage at No. 5 singles.

Women’s college lacrosse

CANISIUS 25, SIENA 11 >> Saratoga grad Brianna Sirianni notched a team-high five draw controls for the Saints in a MAAC defeat. Freshman Alexis Deaken recorded four goals for the Saints (1-9, 0-2 MAAC) and tallied four draw controls. Michelle Schwartz also put four in the cage for Siena.
