The city’s Department of Public Works has scheduled eight weeks of street sweeping and debris cleanup beginning Monday and running through Friday, June 2. The annual initiative will allow the city to remove dirt, brush, leaves and other items that have accumulated over the winter months, according to a news release from the city. “The city’s street cleaning program is an important public service the city of Troy provides to assist our residents and business owners in improving the appearance of their neighborhoods and clear city roadways of dirt and debris built up during the winter season,” Mayor Patrick Madden said in the release. “With the cooperation of the public, our Department of Public Works crews can coordinate an effective cleanup program that benefits the entire Troy community and enhances the overall quality of life in our neighborhoods.” For the program to be conducted thoroughly and efficiently, residents are being asked to help spread the word throughout their neighborhoods and cooperate by following the following guidelines and suggestions: • Know when your streets will be cleaned. A full schedule is available on the city’s website at www.troyny.gov. The schedule will also be shared through the city’s social media sites and is available in City Hall, while The Record will publish each week’s schedule in the preceding Sunday’s edition. • Move your vehicles in accordance with regularly posted alternate-side parking restrictions so public works crews can access the entire street. • Sweep or wash your sidewalks and rake your lawns before sweepers come onto your streets. Additionally, sweep dirt along the curbs and out of gutters into small piles to help make pickup easier. • Bulk trash will not be collected at this time. Bulk trash pickup for residents is available by calling the Department of Public Works. Note that bulk trash may be subject to additional charges. • During posted cleanup days, uncooperative vehicle owners will have their vehicles towed at the owner’s expense. All streets that

will be part of that day’s cleanup will be posted with “No Parking” signs. Notify the Department of Public Works in advance if you know of any abandoned, unregistered or inoperative vehicles in your neighborhood.

• This is a great time to clean your alley, backyards and cut down any weeds or brush. Place the material in a biodegradable bag or bundle the brush and branches together for easier collection.

• Regular trash pickup will occur as scheduled for your neighborhood.

The street cleaning program is not trash pickup, but beginning Saturday, April 22, the Alamo, located on Main Street next to the Rensselaer County jail, will be open on from 7:30 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of each month through December for city residents with identification.

At the Alamo, residents may dispose of yard waste, tires (at a cost of $3 per tire) and bulk trash such as furniture and carpets. No regular garbage, recycling or hazardous waste will be accepted.
