Frear Park Golf Course set to open Monday
TROY, N.Y. >> Though spring officially arrived nearly three weeks ago, it will kick off for city golfers Monday with the opening of the 86th season at Frear Park Municipal Golf Course.
“The Frear Park Golf Course continues to be one of the Capital District’s most popular golf destinations and is great attraction for local golfers of all skill and ability levels,” said Mayor Patrick Madden in a news release announcing the opening date. “We’re excited to open up the course for another fantastic season.”
Season passes and resident discount cards are available for purchase at the Frear Park Pro Shop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Prices are unchanged from 2016 at $900 for a season pass for resident couples ($1,450 for nonresidents), $650 for singles ($950 for nonresidents), $450 for seniors ($650 for nonresidents) and $225 for juniors ($450 for nonresidents) and $25 for a resident ID. Daily greens fess are $15 for nine holes or $20 for 18 holes for residents, $17 and $28 for nonresidents, respectively.
Beginning Wednesday, April 12, tee times can be reserved online through the Department of Parks and Recreation homepage at www.troyny.gov/Departments/ Parks_ Recreation/Home.aspx.
Frear Park was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, one of the game’s greatest course architects, as a 9-hole layout in 1931 and was expanded to 18 holes in 1963. Through the years, it has been one of the Capital Region’s most popular golf destinations, enjoyed by thousands of players each year. The course hosts 27 established leagues, with more than 46,000 rounds played annually.
The start of the 2017 golf season coincides with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Frear Park, the 247-acre public
park located between Route 40 and North Lake Avenue. In addition to the public golf course, Frear Park also features the Frear Park Hockey Arena and other public recreation spaces, includ-
ing a spray pool.
