The Eastern New York chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association awarded more than $13,900 in Environmental Education Grants to 21 local schools — including Tamarac High School in Brunswick, St. Jude the Apostle School in Wynantskill and Cambridge Central School — in honor of Earth Day 2017. This year marks the 16th year the grants have been awarded, with funding raised through member contributions and an annual golf tournament held in honor of the late Peter B. Desrochers, an environmental engineer who was a lifelong champion of the environment and dedicated much of his free time to educating and mentoring students pursuing the field of environmental studies. The local chapter is the only locally based environmental nonprofit, comprised of professionals from the engineering field who collectively focus on the education of students in honor of Earth Day.
