Troy school board members unopposed in re-election bids
TROY, N.Y. >> Three incumbent members of the Troy City School District Board of Education are running for re- election without opposition.
Tom Mayo, Carol Harvin and Bill
Strang are seeking new three-year terms effective July 1. The vote will take place at the same time district residents are deciding the fate of the district’s proposed 201718 budget, with polls open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday May 16 at Schools 2, 12, 14, 16 and 18 and Carroll Hill School.
Harvin has been a board member since 1998 and has served as vice president and parliamentarian, as well as chairing the Transportation, Diversity and Finance committees. She formerly served on the district’s P-Tech Grant Committee and is a current member of the Troy Booster Club. The graduate of Troy city schools has been employed by New York state for nearly 40 years.
Mayo has been a board member since 2005 and currently serves as the board’s vice president and also served previously as parliamentarian. He is a former member of the Troy Booster Club and School 18’s PTA. Mayo is employed by Pioneer Bank and has worked in the banking industry for 33 years.
Strang has been a board member since 2011. A graduate of Troy High School, he is a member of School 18’s PTA and volunteers as a soccer coach. Strang holds degrees in engineering and teaching and has worked as a math teacher and quality engineer.
The district will host a town hall-style meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Troy Middle School to meet the candidates and learn about the proposed budget, as well as a proposition on the budget that would allow the district to set up a capital reserve fund to help it save for future projects.
