HISTORY OF TROY ACTIVISM: The Troy Public Library is hosting a series of three History Talks on activism in Troy this spring. Each lecture will be followed by a writing and drawing session that will allow participan­ts to react to

the topic. HONOR A DECEASED VETERAN: The Rensselaer County Honor a Deceased Veteran Program honor Edwards F. Dougherty on May 8at 0830in the Legislativ­e Chambers, Third Floor of the County Office Bldg. 1600Sevent­h Avenue, Troy. Edward served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Dixie and USS McCord, both of which patrolled and supported our Marines throughout the Pacific Theatre. After his service, Edward worked at American Locomotive, Borden’s Dairy and owned and operated Brownies Tavern. He was also Foreman in the City of Troy’s Dept. of Water Works/Public Utilities. Edward was a member of The Rensselaer County Taverns Associatio­n, The North Troy Stag Rod and Gun Club and the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkil­l. BEACON LEADERSHIP AWARDS: The Independen­t Living Center of the Hudson Valley (ILCHV) recently announced its annual Beacon Leadership Award recipients. This year’s awardees are VENT Fitness, for implementi­ng polices of inclusion of people with disabiliti­es in all its programs and sites; the Seymour Fox Foundation for its support of programs that empower people with disabiliti­es, and to Denise DiNoto, for her lifetime of advocacy. A controvers­y erupted in 2003, with the placement in the Grand Canyon bookstores of a book entitled “Grand Canyon: A Different View,” in which contributo­rs argued that the geologic section exposed in the Grand Canyon, and the canyon itself, are the result of ‘Noah’s Flood’. In 2016, eleven well-credential­ed geologists published “The Grand Canyon: Monument to an Ancient Earth”, with the subtitle, “Can Noah’s Flood Explain the Grand Canyon?” Geologist Dr. Frank Wind will contrast the ideas put forth in these two references.
