TROY, N.Y. >> The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Corporation will welcome the folk music of the Kingston Trio this Friday night at its famed venue.

The Kingston Trio will perform at 7:30 p. m. on Friday, May 12 at The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, located at 30 Second St. in downtown Troy.

The Kingston Trio is one of the few groups today that has survived the many changes in the world of music. The group has remained consistent in their sound, which some suspect explains its resurgence in popularity over the last few years.

Today, the Kingston Trio consists of George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty.

Formed in 1957, The Kingston Trio emerged f rom San Francisco’s North Beach club scene to take the country by storm, bringing the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time.

Just out of college, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard took dormant folk music and gave it a comic twist irresistible to the college crowd. The music was rooted in American Popular culture, but performed with a refreshing style that now seems timeless.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, while influencing the musical tastes of a generation.

Like the Beatles, The Kingston Trio created a national audience for their new style of music, causing a ripple effect on the entire music industry. When Tom Dooley went gold in 1958, the folk revival was born. In no time The Limeliters, The Brothers Four, Chad Mitchell and The Smothers Bros. all found an audience. It was this “folk revival” that set the stage for Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, The Byrds, and the protest movement of the 1960s.

Through changing times, the trio has played on, remaining popular for a simple reason, songs that sound as good today as the first time they were debuted.

More than 40 years after the single “Tom Dooley” shot to the top of the charts, the trio is still on the road about 30 weeks out of year.

Tickets to Friday’s local performance cost $37 or $29 per person, available via phone at (518) 2730038, online at www.troymusichall.org or in person at the on-site Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Box Office.
