COHOES, N.Y.>> Officials are excited for the warm, sunny weather forecast for Saturday, when the city hosts its second annual Springfest.

The city will host the block party from 1 to 6 p.m. along Remsen Street between Columbia and Howard streets.

District 2 city Councilman Don Russell said he decided to start Springfest, as well as Harvest Fest and Winter Fest, as a way for people to get out and explore the downtown area.

“We’re seeing the success that we’ve had from both the Harvest Fest and Winter Fest with bringing people into the downtown area, especially now with all of the things that are happening or are about to happen,” said Russell.

Besides enjoying the downtown storefronts, visitors will also be able to enjoy live music from Brian McCann and Super 400, along with many craft, beverage and food vendors on the streets.

“The weather for Saturday is looking like 70 degrees and mostly sunny, so it should be a perfect day to come out to the downtown area and enjoy some food, some arts and crafts vendors and live music,” said Russell.

Russell is hopeful the warm weather will help to bring more people downtown to shop locally.

“Last year was our first Springfest, and we had almost 500 people,” he said. “I think because of the weather and because of having Super 400 perform, we’re going to see well over 500 people. This event gives the community an opportunity to see your neighbors, have a good time together

and to stay and shop local.”

Russell said events like the seasonal festivals and the city’s annual Rock the Block summer concert series are beneficial to the city.

“These kind of events go hand in hand to enhance our downtown and make people want to either come out and visit or come to live here,” he said

As the festival grows, Russell said he hopes to expand it to includes more downtown streets in the future.
