ACTIVISM IN TROY WRITING SESSION: Using historical examples like newspapers and books, reflect on what it was like for people to encounter and promote radical ideas in Troy. Participants will write small essays, poems, personal letters or letters to the editor representing the imagined ideas of individuals and their perspectives on “us” and “them” at different points in the city’s history. POESTENKILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY: The Poestenkill Historical Society’s presenter this month is Phyllis Chapman. Her topic is “Women of the Revolution - Back Stage Heroines 1839 - 1869”. Known and unknown, Patriot and Tory, find out how women were key players in the Revolution on Tuesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Town Hall on Route 351. POESTENKILL SENIORS: The Poestenkill Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the SullivanJones VFW post in Poestenkill. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshments are served after the meeting, followed by bingo and cards. The hall is handicapped accessible with sufficient parking. WATERFORD MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: The Annual Waterford Memorial Parade will be held on Wednesday, May 24, at 7 p.m. Kenneth Smith, a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Air Force, will lead the parade as the 2017 Grand Marshall. The Parade will line up at 5:45 p.m .from Grace Street proceed to Saratoga Avenue and end at Soldiers and Sailors Park on Broad Street. Step off will be at 7 p.m. sharp. A wreath laying ceremony will be held in the park following the parade to honor our veterans both past and present. WOMEN’S CLUB OF ALBANY: You’ve heard about Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and the Women’s Suffrage Movement, but did you know that there was a strong anti-suffrage movement, and some of the loudest voices were women fighting against the right to vote? On Wedneday, May 24, at 7 p.m., the Woman’s Club
of Albany (WCA) will host Deborah Emmons-Andarawis, curator at Historic Cherry Hill, for a special presentation on the topic. The anti-suffragettes even had their own soundtrack, and songs were written for both sides of the issue. As a special part of the evening’s fare, some of them will be performed by Tony Opalka and Mary Le Fleur. The event is free and open to the public. The Club is located at 725 Madison Avenue, Albany.
