WATERVLIET – Samuel D. Derico, 87, died peacefully Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the Van Rensselaer Manor in North Greenbush with his family at his side.

Born in Watervliet on December 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Santo and Domenica Natarelli Derico.

A lifelong resident of Watervliet, Sam attended School 8 and Watervliet High School. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. His basic training was in Camp Rucker, Alabama and his military service was in Germany.

He was employed by the Behr Manning Co. and later the Norton Co. in Watervliet for over 42 years as a machine operator before retiring in 1991. He was a communican­t of the for-for mer Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Watervliet and coached their softball team at Congress Park in Watervliet.

He loved baseball and was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox. He enjoyed attending his grandchild­ren’s sporting events. He enjoyed listening to big bandband music and played the saxophone in his younger years.

He is the beloved husband of Nancy A. Coughlin Derico; devoted father of Daniel A. (Patty) Derico of Latham, Robert S. (Tammy Spiak) Derico of Maplewood and Nancy C. (John) Holland of Troy; proud grandfathe­r of Joseph and Casey Konicek, Angela and Samuel Derico, Kathryn and Robert Derico; brother of Arthur (Esther) Derico of Watervliet and the late Nicoletta Romanelli, Anthony, Albert and John Derico and Philomena Chiappone; special cousin and dear friend of Dan Natarelli of Saratoga. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be FridaFrida­y at 9:15 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10:00 am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Watervliet. Interment St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 pm.
