CAPITAL DISTRICT GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY: Loyalists in the Mohawk Valley, 1 p.m. If your ancestors lived in the Mohawk Valley then they might have been or were perceived to be Loyalists. The first “North American Civil War” was a very disruptive time - splitting up families, many changing the spelling of their names to denote which side they were on. Most of the British sympathizers fled to Canada. Learn how to trace these settlers through research, both in New York and Canada. A computer resources group follows the meeting. ST. JEAN-BAPTISTE: On Sunday, June 25, at 3 p.m., La Fédération Franco-Américaine du NY will honor the Québec holiday Saint-Jean-Baptiste at the annual Mass in French, led by Fr. Jeffrey L’Arche, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 119 Broad Street, Waterford. The liturgy and hymns will be in French; the homily, in French and English. The tradition of honoring St. Jean in late June came to North America with the French colonists, who first celebrated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River on June 23, 1636, with a bonfire and cannon shots. This free event is open to all; those attending Mass are invited to a reception immediately afterwards in the parish hall. THACHER NATURE CENTER: Go Bonkers for Bats, 10 a.m. Bats are an important species for our agricultural and ecological communities. GRANT COTTAGE: “And They Fought Too: Women Soldiers of the Civil War,” 1 p.m. Many women decided being a nurse, cook, or laundress was not what they wanted to do during the Civil War--they wanted more! Several disguised themselves as men and joined in the battles of the war. Four female soldiers will be detailed by Grant Cottage Site Manager Dave Hubbard, thanks to their memoirs, letters and military records. The suggested donation for programs is $5 per person. 1000 Mt. PLAYS IN PROGRESS: Plays in Progress and Hudson Hall present “Taking a Stand,” an afternoon of staged readings of short pieces written and produced by the playwrights, actors, and directors of Plays in Progress. The reading will take place on Sunday, June 25 at 3 p.m. in Hudson Hall’s newly restored upstairs performance hall at 327 Warren Street, Hudson, and will be followed by a reception with the writers, directors and cast. SARATOGA SPRINGS SUMMER STROLL: The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation offers the Historic Congress Park Summer Stroll on Sunday, June 25, at 10:30 a.m. Join local favorites Charlie Kuenzel and Dave Patterson, owners of Saratoga Tours LLC, as they provide an educational and entertaining stroll through historic Congress Park. Summer Strolls are offered every Sunday through September 3. The cost per tour is $5 for SSPF members and $8 for non-members. Guests may buy a ticket for four tours and receive the fifth free. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: Strawberry shortcake will star at the Thirty-sixth Annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 25, under tents at Gardner’s Ice Cream and Coffee Shop, 15879 NY Route 22 in Stephentown. CONCERT ON THE GREEN: The Poestenkill Historical Society’s annual Concert-on-the-Green will be held on Tuesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. on the Town Hall lawn. “Winchester and Young” will be playing classic rock in harmony. Come and enjoy the warm blended harmonies and sing along to the songs that you know and love. All of our programs are free and the public is

WOOD PARK MUSIC SERIES: The summer music season in Wood Park in Hoosick Falls will begin on Wednesday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. with a concert by the Stardusters, a “big band” playing music of all periods. The eighteen piece group was formed by Cortland Cottrell in the mid seventies, is managed by his Son Bill and conducted by Bill Gaillard. This group has performed at wedding receptions, the “Center” and

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DANCE: The National Museum of Dance is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibition. SCHODACK ISLAND STATE PARK: Schodack Island State Park comes alive with music on Fridays evenings with open mic nights. The entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. and continue into the evening until 8 pm, depending on the crowd. Schodack Landing Fire Company will be selling their great food at Friday Open Mic Nights. There is no fee to enter the park, to be a performer or to enjoy the entertainment. If you are interested in performing, please arrive early and sign up for a performance time. THACHER NATURE CENTER: Learn to Fish at Thompson’s Lake, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. DEC Fisheries staff will teach program participants how to identify common sportfish, how to cast a spin-casting rod, bait a hook and fishing safety. After the fishing education portion of the program, everyone will get a fishing rod and have the opportunity to use the skills they just learned and go fishing.
