ALBANY, N.Y. » Capital region basketball prospect Hameir Wright committed to the University of Washington late Saturday night, according to his Twitter account. He will bypass his year at Brewster Academy and join the Class of 2017. Wright played at Albany Academy and for the Albany City Rocks during the summer. He graduated in 2017, and was scheduled to play a year of prep school. That is no longer the plan for Wright, who indicated this was always a possibility during a March interview with The Record. “If I feel that I’m ready mentally, physically and the feeling that I get is so overwhelming that I would accept a scholarship and leave,” Wright said, “then that’s what I’ll do.”

Wright is listed as the No. 80 recruit in the new Class of 2017 rankings for ESPN, which also has the 6-foot-7, 195-pound athlete as the No. 3 prospect in New York.

Wright had been heavily recruited by new Washington coach Mike Hopkins when Hopkins was an assistant at Syracuse. Now Wright will get a chance to be a part of Hopkins’ inaugural season at Washington.

Wright told ESPN that he reclassified because of the opportunity to be a part of Hopkins’ first season, and in part because his friend Naziah Carter, from Rochester, also committed to play at Washington.

As a senior, Wright averaged 17 points per game at Albany Academy in his senior season. The Cadets won the New York State Federation title in late March.
