TROY - Alice Bates Hickcox, 88, of Delaware Ave. passed away peacefully­fully Monday June 26, 2017 at Van Rensselaer Manor where she was a rehabilita - tion patient. Born to Chester and Catherine Fitzgerby ald Bates she was adopted her aunt Marion Hick - cox and her husband Hamand ilton when her mother died. After Marion died she was raised by Hamilton and his second wife Grace. She was educated in Lan - singburgh schools and was a 1950 graduate of Oneonta State Teachers College.

Alice was a schoolteac­her and taught for 40 years in the Troy City School Sys - tem at School 14. She retired in 1990. Her students were very important to her and she would hear from some of them years later.la

Alice enjoyed reading and watching football and hockey. She was especially proud of her Irish heritage.

She is the aunt of PaHolly tricia Frank of Hudson Falls, Frances Bates ( late: John R.), Heather and Bates all of Sarato - ga Springs, Cathy Snyder of Mechanicvi­lle, Brian Bates of Rotterdam and Tom Cantwell of Troy. She is sister in law of Eileen Bates ( late: John J.) of Troy and sister of the late John Chester Bates Jr., Tony Bates, Mary Cantwell, Lou - ise Bates, George Bates and John Joseph Bates. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be Thursday at noon at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., ( Rte. 32), Wa - terford. Interment will be in Elmwood Hill Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 am till noon prior to the funer - al service.
