DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE: The Chapin Library of rare books at Williams College will host the annual July 4 reading of the Declaration of Independence by actors from the Williamstown Theatre Festival at 1:30 p.m. The actors will read from the second floor outside balcony of Sawyer Library. Visitors should gather on the library quad west of Sawyer Library and between Schapiro and Hollander halls. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside Sawyer Library. The Chapin Library’s collection of Founding Documents will be on view from noon to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Chapin Gallery on the second floor of Sawyer Library (room 406). The event is free and open to the public. USS SLATER: USS Slater will be open to the public for guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Independence Day, July 4. Typically, the ship is closed on Tuesday for continuing restoration, but exceptions are made for significant holidays. Admission is charged. Albany’s World War II destroyer escort is the only DE afloat in America. USS Slater is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge.

GRANT COTTAGE: Love Letters from Mount Rushmore, 1 p.m. From March to September of 1940, Arthur Cerasani, a sculptor and artist from Rochester, worked on Mount Rushmore while his family remained 1500 miles away. He and his wife Mary stayed connected through their letters to one another. Arthur recorded the trials of carving sixty-foot heads on a mountaintop, severe weather conditions and the unpredictable moods and fortunes of master sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Join author Richard Cerasani, Arthur’s son, to learn how the discovery of an old trunk would lead him to a story of love, opportunity and yearning set against the background of the carving of Mount Rushmore. 1000 Mt. CLIMATE CHANGE: In “Hell and High Water: New York Responds to Climate Change,” Mark Lowery will describe anticipated future effects of climate change, the level of greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed to avoid catastrophic effects, and New York State programs to reduce greenhouse emissions and adapt to unavoidable effects of climate change. The program will include a description of the state’s Climate Smart Communities program, which supports local climate action, and ways for individuals to be involved. GRANT COTTAGE: Mark Twain Erupts, 1 p.m. Mark Twain was one of the most prolific and acerbic commentators on religion and politics in his time; his words are remarkably relevant to today’s headlines, over 100 years after his death. He also knew how to poke fun at himself, a talent sadly lacking in many public figures today. Living historian and ordained Baptist minister Rev. Jim Ketcham presents a program as Mark Twain, using Twain’s own words to describe “the whole damned human race.” Fine art photographer Craig Murphy will be onsite (weather permitting) to share the magic of 1860’s tintype photography with visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tintypes created will be available for purchase and may include volunteer subjects. 1000 Mt. HONOR A DECEASED VETERAN: The Rensselaer County Honor a Deceased Veteran Program honors the Magnetto Brothers of Troy at this month’s ceremony on July 10 at 8:30 a.m. in the Legislative Chambers, Third Floor of the County Office Building. located at 1600 Seventh Avenue, Troy. Peter Magnetto served in the United States Navy during WWII seeing action in Sicily, North Africa and Normandy, France. Frank Magnetto also served in the United States Navy during WWII seeing action throughout the Pacific Theatre. Peter married after the war and began a family, becoming a Troy Police Dept. Detective during a 39-year career. Frank became a Fire Fighter for the City of Troy devoting 22 years of service to the Dept. prior to his death.
