DIY GARDEN PROJECTS: Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension of Rensselaer County will present the program “DIY Garden Projects” on Thursday, July 13 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Gardening offers the chance to explore dozens of possible Do-It-Yourself projects, and our Master Gardener Team will show you several of their favorites, including mosaic stepping stones and bird baths. The Hopkins Observator­y, built in 1836-38 by the first professor of astronomy at Williams College, Albert Hopkins, is the oldest extant observator­y in the United States. PINTA & NINA: On Thursday, July 13, the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina’, replicas of Christophe­r Columbus’ ships, will open in Albany. The ships will be docked at Albany Yacht Club, 75 Broadway, Rensselaer, until their departure early Monday morning, July 17. The ships tour together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $8 for adults, $ 7 for seniors, and $6 for students 5- 16. GRANT COTTAGE: “Wars produce many stories of fiction, some of which are told until they are believed to be true,” Ulysses S. Grant wrote in his memoirs. He wrote his memoirs out of financial need, but also because he was genuinely disturbed by the way facts were interprete­d by the growing pre-Confederat­e “Lost Cause” school of thought. His final battle, which ended at Mount McGregor, was a war of words over the interpreta­tion of facts – an attempt to advocate the truth. MARATHON GOLF DAY: Mark your calendar for July 15 for the inaugural Marathon Golf Day hosted by Schenectad­y Municipal Golf Course, 400 Oregon Avenue, Schenectad­y. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit the American Red Cross of Northeaste­rn New York’s Home Fire Campaign to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries across the nation by 25% over a five year period. REPAIR CAFE: The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson is organizing an inaugural Repair Café at the Village Hall, 85 South Main Street, on Saturday, July 15. By promoting repairs, Castletono­n-Hudson wants to help reduce mountains of waste. Starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m., volunteer repair coaches will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. Tools and materials will also be on hand. Repairs can save money and resources, and can help minimize carbon dioxide emissions. But above all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.
