Five Questions

-

Jared Angle is a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, which is in the midst of its annual summer residency at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

1 Who are you?

My name is Jared Angle. I’m a principal dancer with New York City Ballet.

2 What is your best advice for young dancers?

Listen to the corrections you receive, but also to those of the other dancers around you. And if you look in the mirror and your leg is lower than you’d like, or someone is doing it “better,” don’t let yourself be negative and self-defeating. Just keep on working every day and you’ll see improvement.

3 Where do you like to go in your free-time when you’re in Saratoga?

I love going to the farmer’s market and using all the beautiful produce to cook big “family dinners” with the other dancers I share a house with.

4 When did you first perform at SPAC, and what was memorable about that experience?

It’s a favorite story of my grandmother, who witnessed me in my first summer in 1998leaving the stage door and being confronted by lots of ballet students asking for an autograph. I was slightly embarrassed because I was not “anybody,” just barely not-a-student myself. But, as I do now, I felt the appreciation of the SPAC audience.

5 Why do you enjoy coming to Saratoga and performing at SPAC?

Performing outdoors and hearing the wind in the trees is a pretty magical addition to the already amazing act of dancing onstage. And the community of people who support and watch us is so special.
