FREE MOVIE SERIES: The Palace’s “Summer in the City” Movie Series, co-presented by Albany Medical Center and SEFCU, offers eight free, family-friendly movies to children and families from neighborhoods around the Palace Theatre in downtown Albany. MILHAM PLANETARIUM: Williams College invites you to experience the wonders of our universe at the Milham Planetarium, located inside the Old Hopkins Observatory at Williams College. Astronomy students at the college will host free shows for the public on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. through August 3. Audiences will be treated to shows from the high-precision Zeiss Skymaster ZKP3/B opto-mechanical planetarium projector. The Hopkins Observatory, built in 1836-38 by the first professor of astronomy at Williams College, Albert Hopkins, is the oldest extant observatory in the United States. NIGHT SKY ADVENTURE: “Preparing for the Perseid meteor shower,” 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 bright meteors per hour at its peak. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24 and peaks on the night of August 12 and the morning of the August 13. GRANT COTTAGE: Knee High History, 10 a.m. The Civil War years were more than soldiers at war. It was a remarkable time in our country’s history. In song and story, program facilitators Diana O’Brien and Tom Smith remind us that there were heroes on the battlefields, cities, towns and villages who built upon the legacy left by our nation’s founders and who envisioned a country of freedom and opportunity for all. MYSTERY BOOK CLUB: Patricia Cornwell rocked the mystery world when she introduced Dr. Kay Scarpetta in “Post-Mortem”, a gripping tale of murder in Richmond, Va. FREE ART LECTURE: The Albany Institute of History & Art, 125 Washington Avenue, will host Jay A. Clarke, Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Clark Art Institute for a free lecture on Thursday, July 20, at 6 p.m. Clarke will talk about the Clark Art Institute’s summer exhibition “Picasso: Encounters” and explore how Pablo Picasso’s (1881-1973) creative collaborations fueled and strengthened his art, challenging the notion of Picasso as an artist along with his craft. THE BIG RACE: Calling children everywhere…it’s almost opening weekend at the Saratoga Race Course and that means The Big Race is on! On Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Impressions of Saratoga with host a book signing for “A Moose in My Starting Gate.” You’ll have a chance to meet the author, Vicki Addesso Dodd, illustrator, Patrick Jankowski and special guest of honor Longhot the Moose. Bring your book and join in The Big Race fun through Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Each book will have a racing form with the 4 designated “stables” or stores- G Willikers, Northshire Books, Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream and Impressions of Saratoga. Visit each Stable and get their horse stamped in the starting gate. After
you’ve collected all four horses go to G Willikers or Impressions of Saratoga and collect your 1st place ribbon. “A Moose in My Starting Gate” books will be available at each stable for the event. ROLLER DERBY: The summer is starting to heat up with another fierce bout at the Albany Cap Center. Join Albany All Stars Roller Derby on July 22, as the Brawl Stars take the track against the Hudson Valley Horrors Roller Derby. Doors will open at 6 pm, and the game will start at 7 pm. Tickets: $10 presales; Limited quantity of $15 VIP tickets; Kids 10 & under are just $5. SCHUYLERVILLE FLOWER SHOW: The Schuylerville Garden Club will present its annual National Garden Club Standard Flower Show entitled “Out of This World” on Saturday, July 22, from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 23, from noon - 4 p.m. in the Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring St, corner of Spring and Broad St in Schuylerville. There will be Floral Design, Horticulture and Photography divisions. The floral and horticulture divisions will be judged by trained judges. SUMMER IN THE CITY FLEA MARKET: Summer in the City Flea Market and Community Day will be held Saturdays through August 26 at Powers Park, 111th St & 3rd Ave, North Troy from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. There will be activities for all ages, live entertainment, great food, carnival games, bouncy entertainment when available, community resources, & great deals on items.
