RUN FOR THE ROSES: Registrati­on is open for the 32nd Annual Run for the Roses 5K Foot Race on Sunday, August 13 at Grafton Lakes State Park. The event benefits Grafton Community Library, and includes a 2.5 Mile Nature Walk and Kids’ 1 Mile Fun Run in addition to the USATF sanctioned 5K race. Deadline for reduced entry fee is August 7. CARDBOARD BOAT RACE: Hudson Crossing Park presents its 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 12, (rain date is Sunday, August 13) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29 in Schuylervi­lle from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s theme is “The Erie Canal, We Dig It!” celebratin­g the bicentenni­al of the Erie Canal. Race participan­ts will construct a “human-powered”

boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100 percent recycled materials, holding at least one crew member and “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event (materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee). During race preparatio­ns, there will be food, live music and lots of creativity. The first cardboard boat race launches at 1 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. SPEIGLE ELDERS SUMMER PROJECT: The Speigle Elders are kicking off a summer project suggested by Rensselaer County Social Services. When school opens in the fall, single mothers of school-aged children face many budget restrictio­ns, leaving little money to purchase personal essentials for themselves. Members of our senior group are asked to bring in these items to meetings throughout the summer months: tooth paste, tooth brushes, soaps, shampoo, combs, hair brushes, etc. These items will be delivered to the Lansingbur­gh School District in the fall.

PINTA & NINA: On Thursday, July 13, the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina’, replicas of Christophe­r Columbus’ ships, will open in Albany. The ships will be docked at Albany Yacht Club, 75 Broadway, Rensselaer, until their departure early Monday morning, July 17. The ships tour together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. MEALS, POOLS & MORE: With two city pools closing in Troy children will be displaced this summer, so Victory Christian Church of Albany will use their City Kids Smoothie truck as a food truck in Troy. The lunches will be made at the JC Club located at 63 Quail Street. Albany teens from Life Song Special Needs children’s program will help make the lunches. Starting June 27, a route will be formed in Troy where the most children and the greatest needs will be met. The truck will go to South Troy first then to North Troy. In addition, over 300 pools will be given away to families who relied on the city pools to help keep their children cool and busy for the summer. NEW YORK CITY BALLET DANCE VIDEOS: In advance of its 2017 residency of the New York City Ballet (July 5 – 15), Saratoga Performing Arts Center will be releasing a series of unique, locallysho­t dance videos created by videograph­ers and NYCB dancers, Emily Kikta and Peter Walker. The eight videos feature NYCB dancers performing short pieces at iconic locations in Saratoga Springs and Troy, including the Gasholder Building, Yaddo, the Race Track, Congress Park, Saratoga Lake and the Saratoga Train Station. MARATHON GOLF DAY: Mark your calendar for July 15 for the inaugural Marathon Golf Day hosted by Schenectad­y Municipal Golf Course, 400 Oregon Avenue, Schenectad­y. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit the American Red Cross of Northeaste­rn New York’s Home Fire Campaign to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries across the nation by 25% over a five year period. Styles of dance offered include modern dance, ballet, pointe, belly dancing, Zumba, Irish Step, creative movement, pre-ballet and a new country line dancing class with Kevin Richards. First time dancers are encouraged to sign up and/or stop in to observe a class. The summer session begins on June 27 and runs through August 19. The School of the Arts is situated behind the National Museum of Dance in the Swyer Dance Studio, at 99 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs. SARATOGA SPRINGS WALKING TOURS: The Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation is delighted to present their summer of historic walking tours. Join the Foundation for the first of twelve exciting walking tours of historic Saratoga Springs, which will be offered each Sunday from June 18 through September 3. All Sunday morning tours start at 10:30 a.m. and last approximat­ely 90 minutes. The cost per tour is $5 for SSPF members and $8 for non-members. Tours require walking & standing and cover varied terrain. Buy a ticket for four tours and receive the fifth tour free. Reservatio­ns are encouraged, but not necessary.
