1959-1976

The first era of lunar-surface exploration began in 1959, when the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 slammed onto the moon, and ended when Luna 24 returned to Earth in 1976. During that time, NASA's Apollo program completed six manned missions on lunar soil.
