GLENSFALLS, N.Y. » Joe Mansman and The Midnight Revival Band is celebrating the release of its new album, Bastard, with a local show this weekend.

The Glens Falls band is giving fans a free hometown show on Friday night at Mean Max Brew Works, 193 Glen St., featuring fellow area acts The Erotics, Frances Dean and Jason Irwin. Music will begin at 8 p.m.

With the new release out on Sounds and Tones Records, the band continues to establish a sound heavily impelled by outlaw rock, blues, root, and punk. Like all of its shows, the fivepiece band’s only aim is to have a notoriously good time and take the whole place down with them.

Ahead of the CD release show, The Weekender caught up with frontman Joe Mansman to talk about Bastard, Friday’s concert and what’s on the horizon for the band.

Q

: What inspired this new album?

A

: It came about very quickly for the most part. Each song was written in a pretty short timeframe and mostly left skeletal when we started performing them live. I think all of our time together spent on stage playing them while in their in- fancy is what really structured them in the end. Solos were always different, lyrics were changed night after night, practice after practice, arrangements were mostly jam parts, etc. We didn’t sit down with a single one and say “This is how it’s gonna be,” but instead gave them a fair amount of stage play before settling on parts we liked.

Q

: Why did you call it Bastard?

A

: The original title was going to be Wayward Son, and then we voted on changing it to Bastard. About two years ago, I got into this headspace where I wanted to write something thematic. Some of those themes were explored on the last record, and then more on this one.

Q

: What’s your favorite of the new songs to perform live?

A

: Everyone enjoys their own personal favorite. I like playing “Cut Out My Tongue” because it’s fast, heavy, a bit ridiculous even. “Crowbar Hotel” is probably the one we all enjoy a lot.

Q

: You did this release with Sounds and Tones Records. How did that happen? Why did you decide to do that?

A

: S&T put out our “Reap and Sow” sin- gle last summer, and before that was a big support system for us when we first started venturing out of our hometown. They are a huge creative collective based out of the Berkshires that a lot of amazing indie artists call home. We joined them after our first tour.

Q

: What are you looking forward to about the upcoming CD release show?

A:

We’ve never had one, so it’s exciting for us to finally be able to deliver it right. The record actually came out digitally in July, but it’s only coming out physically right now, and we want to be able to give people something we’re really proud of and celebrate it with us.

Q:

What’s next for the band?

A:

Lots of shows. We’re booked up all of September and going into October and even December right now, with some more studio time in between. We already have plans to put out more music this coming winter.
