WILL BRUNSON NAMED STARTING QUARTERBACK
Head coach Greg Gattuso makes his choice
ALBANY, N.Y. » Since the start of Albany’s training camp, quarterbacks Will Brunson and Neven Sussman have been 1A and 1B.
The first depth chart released last week listed Brunson as the No. 1. And on Thursday, head coach Greg Gattuso took it a step further.
“Will is the No. 1,” Gattuso said. “I know I’ve been a little grey on him, but he’s been good...He’s the guy right now. He’s taken every single snap with the 1s. We feel good about him.”
When asked if he’d be the starter in the opening game against Old Dominion on Sept. 2, Gattuso said, “I don’t know how to be clearer.”
Brunson is a sophomore, and started the final two games of the season for Albany last year, and won both of them. He played in four games total and had 285 passing yards. Sussman struggled as the primary start for the first nine games, passing for just seven touchdowns. Gattuso said there could be times that Sussman sees the field in certain offensive schemes.
“(Brunson) is the No. 1 quarterback,” Gattuso said. “Can they change? Yeah, a lot stuff can happen. Unless something physical or mental or you know, but he’s the No. 1 quarterback and we want to have a No. 1 quarterback.”
Albany awaits information on Ibitokun-Hanks
Albany’s star running back Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks went down with an injury during practice on Wednesday.
The running back who had 16 TDs last season will see a doctor on Thursday evening.
He was at practice in pads on Thursday, but not practicing. Gattuso was non- committal about any optimism or pessimism regarding the future of his best offensive player.
“Injuries, sometimes they look worse than they are,” Gattuso said. “Sometimes they look better than they are. You just don’t know. We’ll see how it goes.”
