HARVEST COCKTAIL PARTY: The Van Schaick Mansion on 1Van Schaick Avenue in Cohoes was recently acquired by the General Peter Gansevoort Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Annual Harvest Cocktail Party on September 14is the Mansion’s premier fundraising event. The event will begin with cocktails at 6:30p.m. and will include Mansion tours featuring the historical recollections about the Mansion’s intriguing guests and foothold in American history through the French and Indian and American Revolutionary Wars. Mansion guests and corporate partners will enjoy a signature cocktail accompanied by seasonal fare, a selection of wines and craft beer, music and candlelight. WRITING WORKSHOP: The Troy Public Library, located at 100Second Street, is hosting a series of writing workshops with Amy Halloran. The first workshop will be held on Thursday, September 14, at 6p.m. This workshop will cover the basics of informal interviewing, using a simple question and answer style to gather facts and feelings. This material becomes the ingredients for brief written profiles, or snapshots in words. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.
CRAFT FAIR VENDORS WANTED: The LathamColonie Knights of Columbus are seeking vendors for their craft fair to be held on Saturday, September 30, at the council hall located at 328Troy-Schenectady Rd, Latham. Table space available for indoor displays with additional space outside on the grounds, both open and covered. Reservations close August 26. KINDERHOOK BOOK SALE: The Friends of the Kinderhook Memorial Library Annual September Book Sale will begin with a “First Look” Friends Preview Sale and annual meeting on Friday, September 8, from 6p.m. - 7p.m. Non-Members can join the Friends at this sale to begin their Friends membership and shop ($25; Seniors/ Students $10). The Public Sale is Saturday, September 9, from 9a.m. to 3p.m. Bargain Day is Sunday, September 10, from 1p.m. to 3p.m. where you can take as many books as you like and make a donation. The location is the McNary Center on Sylvester Street just steps away from the Library. The Friends will offer a wide selection of fiction, non-fiction and children’s books carefully selected and sorted for easy browsing. SPEIGLE ELDERS BUS TRIP: The bus departs the church parking lot at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, for the Speigle Elders’ Erie Canal trip to Herkimer, with arrival at 11:30a.m. for lunch at the Waterfront Grill. The boat will embark at 12:30p.m. for a narrated 1-1⁄2 hour cruise on the canal, followed by a visit to the gift shop, with return to Troy in late afternoon. VETERANS HALL: Veterans Hall will be open for the duration of the Schaghticoke Fair, August 30 through September 4. This building located on the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds is comprised of volunteers who feel passionate about thanking our veterans. Many have visited Veterans Hall during the fair, or have come to an Open House to
pay tribute to our veterans. Some come to see a picture, a clipping or perhaps an item donated by family or a friend of a veteran who served our country. Veterans Hall is compiling a list of veterans’ names from Rensselaer, Saratoga, Albany, Washington, and surrounding counties. Getting your veteran’s name on the list is free, easy and a good way to ensure his/ her service will be remembered. VICTORIAN ABSTRACTION EXHIBIT: Carmen’s Cafe, located at 198First Street in Troy, is exhibiting “Victorian Abstraction,” lyric paintings by San Francisco transplant Virginia Bryant, through October 15. Curated by Jim Lewis, the exhibition features 17 paintings and works on paper executed from 2009 to 2017. This is the first public exhibition in Troy for Bryant, whose paintings are collected internationally & have garnered awards and press attention nationally. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday Au- gust 24from 5:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. Carmen’s is open 9a.m. to 4p.m. for breakfast and lunch, on Saturday and Sunday only. The Fall 2017Tutor Training Workshop will begin on September 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Troy. AMERICAN ITALIAN HERITAGE MUSEUM: During August/September, the American Italian Heritage Museum will share the photo journal, “Reflections by Lucia Sirco” with visitors in its Special Exhibit Room. Ms. Sirco’s photo journal captures the people, food and hidden places of the “Queen of the Adriatic” - Venice. She has visited many places in Italy but Venice’s quaint neighborhoods, breathtaking architecture and fascinating people hold a special place in her heart. CCHS CLASS OF ‘77: Come as you are, come as you were --please come and help celebrate the 40-year milestone of the 1977Crusaders.
