BOOK SIGNING ON USS SLATER: Author Martin Irons will be on hand at USS SLATER from 11a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, August 27, for the release of his new book, “Phalanx Against the Divine Wind.” Joining him will be surviving families of two local sailors who were killed during Kikusui No., the first and largest of ten mass kamikaze attacks against the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet in the waters off Okinawa in 1945. Nearly 500U.S. sailors were killed including Arthur Goyer, Radioman 2nd Class from Troy, and John R. Dyer, Jr. Radioman 3rd Class from West Chazy, aboard the USS HAYNSWORTH DD-700, the first warship hit. USS SLATER is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany. GRANT COTTAGE: Explore the life of Frederick (Fred) Dent Grant, eldest son of Ulysses and Julia Grant, from childhood on a Missouri plantation to Civil War battlefields, West Point graduation and a career as U.S. diplomat and Major General. Like his father, Fred encountered hardships and scandals but displayed characteristic resolve to fulfill his duty through it all. When needed by his father in his final months, Fred faithfully and tirelessly served as the family’s spokesman and provided critical support to his mother and other family members following his father’s death.
