WRITING FAMILY STORIES: Cheney Library in Hoosick Falls will host three Writing Family Stories Workshops on October 14, 21and 28, from 10a. m. to noon. Writer Susannah Risley will guide participants inmemory exercises and the use of vivid language to get their stories on the page. The workshops are fun, non- judgmentall and supportive. They provide a way to get started in writing and direction to keep going. The workshops funded by Poets& Writers, Inc. are free and welcome both new and seasoned writers. NUT CRACKER AUDITIONS: The School of the Arts ( SOA) at the National Museumof Dance in Saratoga Springs is excited to again present “The Nutcracker” this holiday season. The performance will feature Second Act variations. All local dancers between the ages of 7and 25 are welcome to audition for a part. Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 23 from 1: 30p. m. - 2: 30p. m. for ages 7- 9and from2: 30 p. m. - 3: 30p. m. for ages 10 and up. A small performance fee of $ 65per dancer will be charged to castmembers to cover production, costuming, and choreography costs. Dancers must commit to weekly afternoon rehearsals on Saturdays, beginning on October 7, a dress rehearsal on Friday, December 8, and two performances on Saturday, December 9at at Maple Avenue Middle School. VENDORS WANTED: The Hope 7Community Center is seeking vendors for a craft/ vendor fair to be held on Saturday, November 18, from 10a. m. - 4p. m., at The Troy Lodge of Elks, 134N. The Averill Park Community Orchestra is starting rehearsals again and is eagerly seeking new members. If you or someone you know plays an orchestral instrument ( strings, woodwinds, or percussion) and may be interested in joining, please contact Christina Desmond at 518- 948- 0565. The orchestra is especially in need of string and low woodwind players. The APCO rehearses at Algonquin Middle School in Averill Park on Wednesday evenings from 7p. m. - 8: 30 p.m ., and performs two concerts a year, one in December and one in May. Rehearsals begin September 13, and new members will be accepted until October 4in preparation for a performance on Sunday, December 17.
FAMILY ARDUINO WORKSHOP: The Tech Valley Center of Gravity at 30 Third Street, Troy, is hosting a family- oriented tech workshop on September 23 from 10a. m. to 1p. m.. Adults will work with aspiring young engineer/ scientist “family” members ( son/ daughter, niece/ nephew, mentee, neighbor’s kid, etc.) to learn microcontroller basics — wiring, basic coding, soldering and design — to build and program a sensor- activated colored night light. Each pair will take home an Arduino Uno microcontroller they can use for unlimited projects. The workshop is geared to kids 8and above, but younger ages are welcome if the accompanying adult feels the child will be able to handle this level of activity. HUDSON RIVER VALLEY RAMBLE: The 18th annual Hudson River Valley Ramble kicks- off on Saturday, September 2, with a weekend full of activities and continues throughout September with some 240exciting outdoor adventures across New York’s Hudson Valley. The Ramble offers visitors and residents of all ages an opportunity to experience the distinct cultural heritage and landscape of the region by hiking a trail, visiting an historic site, or paddling on the river during the Northeast’s most beautiful time of the year. Ramble events are led by naturalists, ecologists, historians, geologists, and trained volunteers from more than 150organizations. Events include hikes, walking tours, paddling excursions, festivals, historic site tours, and other family friendly activities. TRASK SHOW SEEKS ARTISTS: The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation seeks artists inspired by the spirit of Saratoga Springs in all mediums to present and sell their work at the 6th Annual TRASK Art Show& Sale on Thursday, October 5, from 6:30 p.m .—9:30 p.m. at the historic Canfield Casino in Congress Park, Saratoga Springs. Submitted artwork should interpret the spirit of life in Saratoga Springs and reflect the history, architecture, landscape, culture, preservation, philanthropy and generally the spirit of Saratoga Springs. Interpretations can be literal or abstract. Artists are allowed to submit up to three works in any medium with a $ 25 artist entry fee. Deadline for submissions is Monday, September 25.
