City welcomes second- ever female police sergeant
TROY, N. Y. » Two years ago, city police Officer Mary Kate Magnetto watched as her husband, Daniel, was promoted to sergeant during a July 2015 ceremony in City Hall, holding their infant son, Anthony.
On Monday, the Troy Police Department’s second- ever female officer joined her husband as a sergeant, becoming the department’s second- ever female sergeant after a promotion ceremony of her own in City Hall.
The Council Chambers was overflowing with friends, family and fellow officers — her husband and now two children down front — as Mayor Patrick Madden gave the oath of office to Magnetto, a promotion both Madden and Police Chief John Tedesco said was greatly deserved.
“She is an impressive public safety professional,” Madden said before administering the oath, “and I am proud to have her on our force. She is the consummate learner, always seeking new opportunities for additional knowledge. She is admired and respected by her peers and her superi-
ors alike.”
After taking the oath, Magnetto had her new badge pinned to her uniform by her husband, son of former city public safety commissioner Anthony Magnetto, before receiving the congratulations of first the department’s command staff and then her family and fellow officers.
Tedesco said he has every confidence in Magnetto, pointing out he was specifically impressed when she turned down a previously offered promotion because of the demands of her young family.
“You’ve always had good character,“said Tedesco. “but, I think, to put your family first and not know if you would ever have a chance to be promoted again, that speaks volumes about you and about the job you will do for this agency.”
