‘ Pop- up’ bikeways to appear Saturday
TROY, N. Y. » Participants in the annual Collar City Ramble and bicyclists from throughout the Capital Region will have the chance Saturday to experience bicycle- friendly enhancements on three city streets.
Beginning at 9 a. m., Parks & Trails New York, working with Transport Troy, Capital Roots, the city of Troy and the Capital District Transportation Committee, will be demonstrating bicycle- friendly enhancements to city streets that are part of a larger effort to improve bicycle connectivity throughout the city. Troy and the CDTC have hired Parks & Trails New York to conduct a bicycle study, with a particular focus on connecting residents and visitors by bicycle to schools, parks, businesses, the Uncle Sam Bikeway and the future South Troy Riverfront Bikeway.
The “pop- up” bikeways will be located along three blocks in South Troy, with each block demonstrating a specific treatment type proposed as part of the Troy Trail Connections Plan. The enhancements include a striped bike lane and bicycle wayfinding signage on 4th Street between Adams and Washington streets, neighborhood bikeway enhancements that include shared lane and route markings and bicycle wayfinding signage on Washington Street between 4th and Hill streets, and a two- way cycle track on Hill Street between Washington and Liberty streets that acts like an on- road trail but is protected from traffic by a physical barrier and wayfinding signage.
“The city of Troy is thrilled to collaborate with Parks & Trails New York and the Capital District Transportation Committee on this exciting project in our community
during the annual Collar City Ramble,” said Mayor Patrick Madden. “Part of our Troy Trail Connection Project, this event is a great opportunity for us to learn from the experience
of residents and families of our biking community who participate in this unique neighborhood- level event. The pop- up demonstration promotes transportation safety and supports Troy’s ongoing efforts to develop and implement our bike route network expansion across the Collar
City.”
The demonstration project will remain set up until 2 p. m. Saturday, giving neighborhood residents and anyone else interested in improving biking in Troy the opportunity to ride through an urban bikeway. For those who doesn’t own a bike, CDPHP Cycle!, a
two- month- old bike- sharing service offered by the Capital District Transportation Authority, will have a docking station at the demonstration location at Hill and Liberty streets. For more information about the effort to improve bicycling in Troy, visit http:// troytrailconnections. weebly. com.
