Engineers go for4- 0 in Buffalo

UAlbany, Union play at home coming off wins

BUFFALO, N. Y. » RPI’s undefeated ( 3- 0) football team play their fourth game and second road contest — all nonleague — with a trip to fellow unbeaten Buffalo State College ( 2- 0) of the Empire 8 for a noon contest Saturday.

The Engineers have defeated William Paterson ( 45- 0), WPI ( 36- 14) and Western New England ( 31- 14) in their first three games, making it the first time since 2003, Ralph Isernia’s first year as head coach, that RPI has won its first three games.

Rensselaer last won its first four games of a season in 2008 when it started 7- 0. That team finished 8- 2 with a win in an ECAC Playoff Game, 34- 31, over Alfred in the final game on ‘ 86 Field.

Last week, junior Nick Cella ran for 98 yards and a touchdown to lead Rensselaer, which had 242 yards and three scores out of the backfield. Nine different players had positive rushing yards, including senior Ethan Wells, who contribute­d 57 yards and a 9- yard touchdown on 17 carries. Maliek Kelly added nine yards with a 6- yard score. On defense Bryan Hayes led all players with 13 tackles ( 6 solo) and a pass breakup and Sean Egan was chosen to the D3football. com National Team of the Week after he tied the school record with three intercepti­ons against Western New England.

Buffalo State began the season with a 20- 19 win over Bridgewate­r State, then defeated Morrisvill­e State 53- 48 in their Empire 8 opener last weekend on the road. Bengals quarterbac­k Kyle Hoppy connected with Had Bryant for a 41- yard touchdown with 57 seconds to earn a dramatic win.

UAlbany hosts Villanova in CAA opener

The University at Albany football team opens its Colonial Athletic Associatio­n schedule at 7 p. m. Saturday night when it hosts No. 7/ 8 Villanova at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
