Annual Arsenal City Run caps busy weekend
WATERVLIET, N. Y. » Dan Jordy didn’t plan to run in Sunday’s Arsenal City Run, even though he ran competitively at John Jay High School in Dutchess County and later Binghamton University.
For the first time, he decided to sign up for the 26th annual race, one of the oldest 5K races in the country, and he was victorious.
“I did the Malta 5K a couple weeks ago, and it was faster than I thought it would be, and some people said I could come and run a little bit faster here, so I signed up two or three weeks ago,” the 33- year- old General Electric engineer said after completing the course in 16: 19. “I wasn’t planning on doing it. I thought it would be a fast course, but it’s just too hot right now.
“I went out to try to go under 16 minutes, and then, at like three quarters of a mile, the heat kind of got to me, so it was more of a see how hard I could run but not how fast.”
Jordy, who lives in Glenville, came home just ahead of Chuck Terry and Matt Ninneman, both of Albany, who finished second and third, respectively. Nicole Soblosky finished first among women, seventh overall, with a time of 18: 32.
Sunday marked the final day of a weekend of events around the city, beginning with a Friday afternoon a pep rally at Watervliet High School hours before the Cannoneers’ 16- 14 homecoming night football win over Chatham. Saturday was a day filled with family- friendly activities at Watervliet Dome, followed by live music in the early evening.
Raceday kicked off with a one- mile Fun Run, followed by the 5K. After the run, the community gathered back at the Dome for food and more
family fun.
Jordy said after running the race for the first time this year, it’s a good bet it won’t be his only time.
“It’s a good course, I heard there’s a good afterparty. If it was cooler, it would probably be a faster course, but it’s a fair course,” said Jordy. “I know it’s a certified
course, which is good. Overall, I think it was a good course. I’ll probably come back.”
