ALBANY INSTITUTE: On Sunday, October 1at 2p. m., Elizabeth Kornhauser, the Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will give a special lecture on Thomas Cole’s Transatlantic Career at the Albany Institute of History & Art. Her talk explains how the Met’s upcoming exhibition, “Thomas Cole’s Journey: Atlantic Crossings,” will establish Cole as a major 19th century artist within a global context. This lecture is open to the public and included with museum admission. Admission rates for October 1are $ 5for adults, $ 4for seniors and students with ID, $ 3for children aged 6- 12, and free for children under 6. Albany Institute members are admitted for free. MUSICIANS AT MA’ALWYCK: As we mark the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the First World War, the Musicians at Ma’alwyck look at its effect on the artistic world, and the bravery, commitment and honor of musician soldiers. “To A Soldier” pairs readings of letters from violnist Samuel Hochstein, who was killed in action in October 1918, and other soldiers with the searing piano quintet written by violinist Samuel Gardner to depict Hochstein’s life, along with music of Kreisler, William Kroll and Shostakovich. Guest readers are Musicians of Ma’alwyck flutist Norman Thibodeau and Dr. William Levering, Pastor of First Reformed Church in Schenectady. 4, at 6p. m., John Caher, Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications, NYS court system and former senior reporter for the New York Law Journal, will discuss his book, “The Curious Case of Kiryas Joel” at the Main Library, 100Second Street. Caher’s book recounts the first time in American history that a governmental unit was established for a religious group, prompting years of litigation resulting in a landmark church- state decision from the United States Supreme Court. CIVILWAR ENCAMPMENT: The Friends of U. S. Grant Cottage will host a Civil War Encampment on Saturday, October 7, from 10a. m. to 4p. m. on the grounds of the U. S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site in Wilton. The event will feature Civil War Union Generals and their wives, the Sons of the Union Veterans, a Civil War surgeon and infantrymen, along with reenactors portraying Mark Twain, Clara Barton, Grant Cottage caretaker Martha Clarke, and an early suffragette. Musical performances will include banjo player Tom Smith playing throughout the day, The Veterans in the New Field at noon and Run the River at 3 p. m. Local authors of books about the Civil War will be on- hand for book sales and signings. Admission to the event is $ 10for ages 13and up, with free admission for children 12and under.
