AP girls volleyball tops Columbia

AVERILL PARK, N. Y. » Averill Park’s varsity girls volleyball team defeated cross town rival Columbia 19- 25, 25- 20, 25- 19, 25- 17 Tuesday night.

Maddy Dunigan led the Warriors with 23 kills and Sydney Jones had 39 assists 4 kills. Mallory Wood had 10 kills to improve Averill Park to 6- 3 in the Suburban Council and 7- 3 overall. BURNT HILLS- BALLSTON LAKE 3, COLONIE0 » Burnt Hills defeated Colonie 25- 8, 25- 9, 25- 16. Hannah Shell and Carlie Rzeszotars­ki combined for 10 kills and seven aces for the Spartans. BH- BL is 9- 0 in Suburban Council play and 14- 3 overall. Colonie fell to 1- 9.

BALLSTON SPA 3, SHAKER 0 » Ballston Spa swept Shaker 25- 20, 25- 19, and 25- 22. For the Scotties Megan McMahon had 19 assists and eight kills, Angelina Stile had 10 digs, Captain Madison Amico had four aces and Sarah Prtitchard nine service points.

For Shaker Sam Hardwich had one ace, seven digs, and five kills. Lexi Ratigan had 20 digs and Alana Paladino had five kills, two

assists and one dig.

SARATOGASP­RINGS6, TROY 0 » Julia Di Menna scored a hat trick while Madilyn Eddy, Brianna Dungate and Lauren Livingston also scored for Saratoga Springs’ varsity girls soccer teamin a 6- 0 win over Troy High Tuesday evening.

The Flying Horses’ Maddie Rife nb erick made a match- high 23 saves while the Blue Streaks’ duo of Lexi Bakkalapul­o and Natalie Jillison combined for seven saves in the shutout. SHENENDEHO­WA11, ALBANY 0 » Mia Longo and Ava Sullivan both recorded hat tricks to lead an offensive explosion from the Plainsmen. Amanda O’Brien, Jen Kirker, Lauren Cavert, Sarah Monroe and Caroline Pyron also scored for the Plainsmen. Kelsey Kohler made three save for the shutout. SCHUYLERVI­LLE3, AMSTERDAM 0 » The Black Horses got goals from Cassandra Cooper, Amy Moreau and Myranda Gale scored her first varsity goal in a Foothills Council home win over Amsterdam. Brooke Keefer provided two of the assists and Schuylervi­lle goalkeeper Caitlin Kelleher made four saves for her 11th shutout.

Boys soccer

SARATOGASP­RINGS6, TROY 1 » The Saratoga Springs boys soccer team celebrated its senior night with a 6- 1 win over Troy in a Suburban Council contest.

Faris Osman got Troy ( 47- 1) on the board early, but Saratoga ( 10- 1- 1) responded quickly. Eren Kilic scored for the Blue Streaks for the first of six unanswered goals. Simon Smith led the way with two goals and Evan Farr had a goal and an assist. Ryan Postlethwa­it and Aidan Rice both found the back of the net as well. Conor Murphy anchored a strong back line, working hard to turn away a few threatenin­g chances by Troy’s Kevin Vargas. SHAKER 3, BALLSTON SPA0 » Shaker scored a beautiful goal in which Ryan Eagan set up Will Augstell to put the home team up 1- 0 early. The rest of the first half was relatively even with both teams generating a few chances, but no goals. In the second half Ballston Spa had an excellent chance saved by Keegan Flaherty. With about 15 minutes to go Zaheer Irani whipped in a corner kick that Ethan Snyder headed home to double Shaker’s lead. Ballston Spa pushed everyone forward and Shaker caught them on the counter when Hassan Alfadhil set up Ian Wu for the insurance goal. SHENENDEHO­WA4, ALBANY 2 » Jaylin Sykes, Noah Faro and Ethan Brunell scored in the first half to give the Plainsmen all the offense they needed. Albany pulled one back before Sykes scored his second off a pass from Zach Merritt to make it 4- 1. Emmanuel Mogabo scored late for Albany to complete the scoring.

CBA1, NISKAYUNA0 » Brady Van Epps finished an assist from Wyatt Leto in the 18th minute for the only goal of the match. AVERILL PARK 2, COLUMBIA 1 » Logan Bielawski scored twice for the Warriors off assists from Aaron Masse in a Suburban Council contest. The Blue Devils pulled one back in the final minute on Cameron Plowinski’s goal from an Edward Molina assist. BERLIN 9, HOOSIC VALLEY 2 » Kody Gillespie and Derick Kehn scored for Valley to take an early lead but Berlin answered with seven goals in the first half to make it 7- 2 at the half.

Ryan Willis have four goals and three assists for Berlin and Tyler Kellar have added a hat trcik and three assists. GREENWICH 2, HOOSICK FALLS 1 » Johnny Swertner was credited with the goal and Liam Kelleher with the assist as the Witches took a 1- 0 lead in the 19th minute. Hoosick Falls ( 3- 8, 3- 9) answered six minutes into the second half when Anthony Amidon was sent behind the Greenwich defense by John Reynolds to score the tying goal. Minutes later Greenwich responded as Swertner sent a ball to the weak side and Aidan Abernathy was there for Greenwich ( 7- 4, 8- 4- 1) to put the ball into the net. MECHANICVI­LLE 6, TAMARAC 2 » Chris Ciccarelli’s hat trick let the Raiders to a 6- 2 victory over Tamarac in Wasaren League play. Jeff Luce chipped in with two goals and two assists and Marcus Tobin had one goal. Tyler Kraszewski had seven saves for the Red Raiders who moved to 11- 0 in league play and 11- 1 overall.

Boys volleyball

SHENENDEHO­WA3, SHAKER 0 » The Shen boys squad swept Shaker 25- 17, 25- 16, 25- 17 to improve to 9- 0 in Suburban Council play. Shaker fell to 4- 5.

The Plainsmen were led by Brendan Spulnick with 17 kills and six aces, Dylan Urbanski with 27 assists, four kills and seven digs and Jack Normandin with eight kills and five digs.

Nick Basco recorded six kills and 10 digs for the Blue Bison and teammate Tyler Lloyd provided 15 assists.

Field hockey

EMMA WILLARD 2, ICHABOD CRANE 0 » Sarah Shamlian and Anna Boggess scored for the Jesters in a Patroon Conference contest. Heidi Zahnleuter recorded one of the assists and Molly Zahnleuter had the other. Kat Fousek made two saves in the cage for Emma Willard ( 5- 1 Patroon, 5- 2 overall).

College soccer

HVCC’S AXTMANN WINS AWARD » Hudson Valley men’s soccer student- athlete Garrett Axtmann, a Maple Hill grad, was named men’s soccer NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Axtmann was also named the NJCAA Region III Player of the Week.

Axtmann recorded 10 points in a 2- 1 week for Hudson Valley with backtoback five point games against Jamestown and Clinton. Garrett scored twice on two penalty kicks against Jamestown and assisted and on the Vikings third goal to maintain the team’s two- goal lead over the Jayhawks. In the Vikings 6- 0 win over Clinton he scored a goal and assisted on three of the Vikings’ other five goals.

The HVCC men’s soccer program has improved to 7- 4 overall and have now won two straight games. The men’s soccer team is home again on Sunday, Oct. 8 to play North Country at 1 p. m.
