Fire hits North Greenbush home
No injuries at scene
NORTH GREENBUSH, N. Y. » The dead- end street on Glenwood Road was filled with numerous fire trucks and emergency vehicles Thursday morning as officials battled a blaze at an old farmhouse.
Defreestville Fire Chief Brian McCrae said that firefighters were called to 97 Glenwood Road before 11 a. m. for a structure fire.
McCrae said roughly nine mutualaid agencies helped battle the blaze and covered other fire stations during the blaze. Firefighters were on scene for nearly two hours, but they were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes.
“Right now the North Greenbush Police Department and the Rensselaer County Cause and Origin Team are looking into the cause of the fire; they haven’t ruled out anything yet, they are just starting their investigation now,” said McCrae. “The first crews that got here they established the water supply and they went right in and knocked down the bulk of the fire on the second floor to stop the spread of the fire.”
Firefighters did have to cut out part of the roof to check for extensions.
“The house is what they call a balloon frame construction, where everything is kind of wide open in the walls, so if they see some smoke they have to pull some ceiling down to make sure there’s no fire still burning in there,” explained McCrae.
McCrae said that no one was home in the residence at the time of the fire and that no one was injured at the scene. Officials believe that the house is not considered a total loss yet, however, they do believe that the house is currently unlivable.
