Ex-PBA leader accused of theft
Collington allegedly took $6,200 from union account
TROY, N.Y. » Just one month after resigning as president of the city’s police union, Aaron Collington was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing over $6,000 from the union.
According to a news release from state police Wednesday, an investigation revealed Collington, 48, stole $6,200 in cash from a fund he managed. He was charged Wednesday with thirddegree grand larceny, a felony,s arraigned in City Court and released on his own recognizance.
According to documents filed in court, investigators said Collington took $6,200 from the Police Benevolent Association’s bank account and deposited it in his own account at SEFCU. According to investigators and court documents, Collington used the money to pay back rent on an apartment and to have a locking boot device removed from his car.
After Collington abruptly resigned last month, Officer Nicholas Laviano, the PBA’s second vice president, was moved up to serve as its president. The city just announced Friday it had reached agreement with the PBA on a new contract, which was scheduled for discussion at Wednesday night’s meeting of the City Council’s Fi-
nance Committee.
Laviano did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday afternoon, while Police Chief John Tedesco said he could not comment on a “personnel matter.”
