Rensselaer County housing group gets $250G state grant
Low- and moderate-income Rensselaer County residents will benefit from $7.5 million in state funding announced Wednesday to construct, rehabilitate and improve the homes of 367 income-eligible families across the state.
The funding was announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and comes from New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s Affordable Home Ownership Development Program. The program has so far awarded nearly $198 million to create or improve more than 10,400 homes.
“Giving more New Yorkers the opportunity to achieve and maintain the American dream of home ownership is critical to strengthen communities across this state,” Cuomo said in a news release announcing the funding. “With this funding, we move closer to ensuring that all Empire State residents have access to a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.”
Rensselaer County Housing Resources will be the recipient of a $250,000 grant to assist with the improvement of approximately 20 housing units on sites scattered around the county. Awards will help pay for improvements to existing owner-occupied single or multi-family homes, condominiums or cooperatives, acquire and rehabilitate owner-occupied homes for sale, and construct new owner-occupied homes for sale.
“These AHC grants allow 367 families to maintain the safe home environment that they deserve,” said Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauska. “Thanks to our nonprofit partners, we are able to preserve and protect affordable homeownership in regions across the state while ensuring that our communities continue to flourish.”
Gramercy interns set pet adoption program
TROY, N.Y. » The fall intern class at Gramercy Communications is partnering with Peppertree Rescue and Kitten Angels to host a Community Pet Adoption Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Troy Innovation Garage, 24 4th St.
Visitors will be able to meet adoptable cats and dogs from each rescue organization, as well as visit with local vendors, including Barkchic, Pet Spas and Suites and Benson’s Pet Center. A raffle and donation drive will also be hosted to benefit Peppertree Rescue and Kitten Angels.
The event is free and open to the public and is a culminating moment of the Gramercy internship program, which includes a community giveback opportunity every semester. This fall, Gramercy Communications interns Brianna Ferrara and Jessica Lyden envisioned and planned the Community Pet Adoption Event from the ground up.
“It is a great feeling to
know that we are building upon the legacy of past Gramercy intern classes by continuing to give back to the community through the development of our own initiative,”
said Ferrara. “I am proud to be part of an internship program that values the belief that good deeds make our community stronger.”
