SKATING LESSONS: Since 1951 the Hudson-Mohawk Figure Skating Club has offered Saturday morning skating lessons at the RPI Field House. The next season starts on November 4 with both children and adult figure skating lessons, plus children’s beginning hockey from 9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Saturday mornings through March 17. Each session includes a half-hour lesson, plus half-hour practice with US Figure Skating Qualified Instructor­s. Anthony Ligato, Pastor, invites members of the greater community to a 9 a.m. Mass, at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 43 Brookside Avenue, Wynantskil­l, to remember and honor all living and deceased veterans. MARCH OF DIMES CHEFS AUCTION: One of the area’s most popular charity food events, the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction, takes place on October 24, beginning at 6 p.m. at Hilton Garden Inn in Troy. The Stephentow­n Historical Society is conducting a raffle for a hand-hooked rug created by the late Barbara T. Peterson, an expert at the craft and a nationally known teacher of the art. Peterson’s family has donated one of her rugs to benefit the society. This rug is a floral design, “Mary,” by Jane McGown Flynn. It is 24 by 36 inches and is worked in handdyed wool in shades of wood rose and greens on a soft colonial blue background. The roses and other flowers exhibit the fine shading effects that Peterson achieved by careful gradation of her hand-dyed wools. The drawing will be held at the December 3 Historical Society meeting. page. ERIE CANAL EXHIBIT: “Enterprisi­ng Waters: New York’s Erie Canal” will be on display through October 20, 2019. The exhibition honors the bicentenni­al anniversar­y of the Erie Canal’s constructi­on and features artifacts, images, posters, and documents from the collection­s of the State Museum, State Archives, State Library, and cultural institutio­ns from across the state. The first phase of the exhibition explores the circumstan­ces leading up to building the canal, the constructi­on, and the famous “wedding of the waters” that marked the opening of the completed canal in 1825. Registrati­on is now open for the 5th annual Barrett Memorial Run for students in grades K-8, which will take place on Saturday, October 21, at Columbia High School. The 2.7 mile course begins on the athletic fields before going up into the woods surroundin­g the school. Once on the trail, you will encounter hills, creeks, bridges and fields. The race will conclude on the track where everyone can watch you complete your run. A youth t-shirt will be included with entry while supplies last (register by October 6 to guarantee a shirt). WORLD WAR I EXHIBIT: The New York State Museum opens “A Spirit of Sacrifice: New York State in the First World War” on April 15. On display through June 3, 2018, the exhibition explores New York’s pivotal role in World War I and features artifacts, images, posters, and documents from the collection­s of the State Museum, State Archives, State Library, and cultural institutio­ns from across the state. The exhibition is organized into six distinct areas covering New York’s participat­ion in the war both at home and on the warfront, and features a life-size recreation of a trench on the Western Front. The Museum also offers an online exhibition featuring an interactiv­e World War I timeline and a teacher’s guide (launched later this spring) and an exhibition catalogue (to be published by SUNY Press in December 2017). Located at 222 Madison Avenue in Albany, the Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. USS SLATER: USS SLATER is scheduled to open to the public on Wednesday, April 5. This year will mark the ship’s 20th season in Albany. A National Historic Landmark, USS SLATER is the only remaining World War II Destroyer Escort afloat in America. USS SLATER is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Once open, public hours will be Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through November. Ancestry allows you to look at birth, marriage, and death certificat­es, various census records, draft and war records. Another addition to the digital age is Mango; with this resource you can learn a number of languages. You will practice with a person who uses that language so you will get the inflection­s. Mango can be accessed from your home so that you can talk along with the teacher. Flipster is a resource to look at digital magazines. In order to use Mango and Flipster all you need is your library card and the 4 digit pin that you receive when you register.
