Troy Rehabilitation & Improvement Program now has a second Collar City location called TRIP on Tenth, offering area residents easy access to help with both affordable housing and health care.

The satellite office recently opened at 378 10th St. in Troy’s Hillside North neighborhood.

This new facility is meant to embody healthy neighbors and healthy neighborhoods.

In this space, an office for the longtime organization’s rental management team, residents can pay their rent, submit maintenance requests or talk to property managers about any concerns. Additionally, neighbors will have immediate access to information on rental units, neighborhood group initiatives, workshops and training sessions on community development and the path to sustainable homeownership.

On why TRIP decided to create a satellite location in Hillside North, in addition to its River Street headquarters, executive director Christine Nealon said the idea really came from the residents, who had requested quicker, easier access to TRIP and its varied services.

“We listened and said we need a satellite office that brings all of those services to the neighborhood,” she said.

The office is located among an area that currently has a high concentration of TRIP properties, but the ultimate goal is for that to change.

“Our ideal outcome of this property is that the market for neighbors purchasing homes next to them and becoming their own property managers ... becomes such a strong market that we even have to look at selling our properties to them,” Nealon said, “and then moving on to the next community.”

In listening to their residents, TRIP also learned the neighborhood was in need of access to healthcare support. So, the organization found a way to make that part of TRIP on Tenth too.

In a partnership with Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan, the new location will also provide visitors the opportunity to meet face-to-face with a community health specialist, learn about free or lowcost health insurance options, get help scheduling a doctor or dentist appointment, talk to a nurse, attend a health screening, or be connected with wellness resources. A CDPHP representative, either a nurse or a health care coordinator, will be on site from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“The intersection between housing and healthcare is what drove us to have a partnership with CDPHP,” Nealon said.

“CDPHP is thrilled to partner with TRIP on the opening of our first Community Connect location, a place where Troy residents can go to get information on affordable housing and health care,” CDPHP president and CEO Dr. John Bennett said.

Troy Mayor Patrick Madden, who previously served as

TRIP’s executive director for 30 years, said he is impressed with the Trip on Tenth facility for its great renovation, better service and convenience for TRIP consumers and additional healthcare offerings, he said.

In a neighborhood that has been identified for having high needs regarding healthcare, Madden said, “This will put health resources right in the neighborhood in a very welcoming environment.”

The mayor continued, “To see TRIP move in this direction is really heartening for me and I think it’s a terrific new facility, a terrific new

approach. I’m very optimistic for it.”

During a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony, TRIP on Tenth was dedicated in memory of a beloved neighbor, Mr. Emanuel (Bobby) Pompey, who previously owned the property. “He was a figure in this community for years. Everyone knew him,” Nealon explained, noting

that because of this history the property has great energy. “He was kind of like everybody’s friend, dad, uncle, brother.”

Nealon said that TRIP on Tenth came from listening carefully to the people of Hillside North. “Really we look to the community for answers and guidance on what they want and need. We’ve always believed that

community members have the answers, they may just need to connect with other resources. We listen to the community and hear the answers, and then mobilize to bring those resources and tools to help them create their vision.”

Now that Trip on Tenth is open, the intent is for that vision to continue flourishing. Nealon said, “It’s just a place

that can serve as a central location for people to come in and really identify further initiatives to create a balanced community that has a quality of opportunity for all of its residents.”

TRIP on Tenth is now open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
