Merritt leads Troy basketball past CBA

TROY, N.Y. » Nazaire Merritt scored 19 points and Joe Casale added 15 as Troy High’s varsity boys basketball team earned a 70- 64 Suburban Council win over visiting CBA Tuesday night.

Latyce Faison scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter on 8-for-8 shooting from the free throw line to ice the contest for the Flying Horses. Kevin Mora added 11 points for Troy.

Andrew Signor scored 21 points to lead the Brothers while Jordan King added 17 points in the deafeat.

MOHONASEN 59, BURNT HILLSBALLS­TON LAKE 46 » Duncan Tallman sored 16 poitns, Jalani Abdul-Aziz added 15 and Gregory Van Epps finished with 14 points for the Warriors in the win. Alex Jameson scored 15 points to lead the Spartans in the matchup of two Class A Suburban Council squads.

It was a year ago that the Red Raiders saw an 18- point lead evaporate on its home court. Mechanicvi­lle saw history repeat itself, leading by as much as 15 points before Stillwater sophomore Mason Seymour buried a three-pointer to tie the contest at 43 apiece. Sophomore James Galarneau put one in from underneath the basket with 4:03 left in the contest for a 50- 49 lead, the last points the Warriors would score. Mechanicvi­lle finished with an 11- 0 run to clinch the win.

Girls basketball

SHAKER 44, NISKAYUNA 34 » Shyla Sanford scored a game- high 15 points and teammates Jules DeBeatham added nine and Lexi DeBeatham had eight for the Blue Bison in a Suburban Council win over the Warriors. Oliva Owens scored 14 points to lead Niskayuna’s offense. GUILDERLAN­D 67, COLUMBIA 60 » Aysia Pink scored 19 points and Graci Serravillo added 15 for the Dutchmen. Emily Zeyak scored 18 points and Alysia Roldan had 14 points to lead the Blue Devils.

Zeyak and Roldan both scored 10 in the first quarter as Columbia jumped out to a 28-22 lead but the visitors were held to just four points in the second quarter.

SHENENDEHO­WA 103.5, NISKAYUNA 80.5 » Jackson Homan won the 500 freestyle and helped Shen finish first in the 200 medley and 200 free relays in a Suburban Council contest. Brian Harding won the 100 breaststro­ke as an individual and was also part of the relay wins.

Men’s basketball

MEMPHIS 67, ALBANY 58 » Kareem Brewton Jr. scored 19 points with three 3-pointers, Jeremiah Martin scored the go- ahead basket, and Memphis held off Albany 67- 58 in Tuesday night’s Gotham Classic matchup to win its third straight.

Albany rallied on an 8-1 run to tie it at 45 on David Nichols’ layup midway through the second half. Martin scored a go-ahead layup, Raynere Thornton dunked and Memphis pulled away.

Albany closed to 49- 48 on Alex Foster’s 3- point play, but Jimario Rivers scored five in a 9- 0 run and Memphis led 58- 48. Joe Cremo’s two free throws with 3: 04 left pulled Albany within three points, but Jamal Johnson hit a corner 3 and the Great Danes got no closer than seven down the stretch.

Martin scored 13 with four assists and Rivers scored 11 for Memphis (72), which led 29-22 at halftime. The Tigers shot 46.9 percent from the floor to Albany’s 34.4 percent.

Cremo scored 16, Nichols had 14, and Greg Stire grabbed 11 rebounds for Albany (10-2), which saw its four-game win streak end.

It was the first meeting between the schools.
