FIRST DAY HIKE: Ring in the New Year with a history/nature hike at Peebles Island State Park. This gem, nestled where the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers come together between Waterford and Cohoes, is easily accessible for all ages. The hike explores the history of the Island which dates to the 1600’s and a chance to view wildlife including deer and eagles. Dress warm and bring binoculars and/or a camera. THACHER NATURE CENTER: Ring in the New Year with an 11a.m. winter snowshoe walk in the park. January 9, “Archaeological Evidence for Pre-Clovis Occupation of Northeastern North America.” When and how did humans first colonize the Americas? SHRINERS: The Oriental Shriners Temple #7 announces their elected officers for 2018: Potentate Gaylord Hawley; Chief Rabban Barry Trasacco; Assistant Rabban Daniel Saville; Oriental Guide Paul Kahian; Recorder James Vooys; Treasurer Daniel Rhoades; High Priest & Prophet Jeffrey Lindstrad; Trustee (3years) William Reid; Representatives to Imperial Council Gaylord Hawley and Barry Trasacco. The public installation of elected and appointed officers will be held on Saturday, January 13, at 1p.m. at the Oriental Shrine Center, 75Water Plant Road, Spiegletown. The installation will be preceded by the annual reports and a social hour. It will be followed by a reception in the dining hall.

AFGHANISTAN LECTURE: Guest speaker Younus Samadzada presents his perspective on the changing character of religion and culture in Afghanistan. The region has a long history openness to many religions: both Sunni and Shia Muslims, Zoroastrians, Sikhs, Hindus, Jews, Roman Catholics and Buddhists. Very few adherents of most of these religions remain. By the 1950s, the dominant religion had become Sunni Muslim, and both the government and warring factions have instituted strict adherence in recent years. Refreshments at 12:30p.m. are followed by the 1:15p.m. program in Room 224, Campus Center, Sage Colleges Albany Campus, New Scotland Ave. at Academy Road, Albany. This free event is presented by the Capital District Humanist Society.

KINDERHOOK MEMORIAL LIBRARY: Join Library Trustee and Friend Marian Sole for a talk and slide presentation on her journey along Hadrian’s Wall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern England that marked the northwest frontier of the Roman Empire for 300years. About to apply for Medicare, Marian decided she needed a physical and intellectual challenge so she undertook the 83-mile trek between the North Sea and the Irish Sea, exploring the best preserved Roman frontier in the world. 4p.m., 18Hudson Street, Kinderhook.
