AFGHANISTA­N LECTURE: Guest speaker Younus Samadzada presents his perspectiv­e on the changing character of religion and culture in Afghanista­n. The region has a long history openness to many religions: both Sunni and Shia Muslims, Zoroastria­ns, Sikhs, Hindus, Jews, Roman Catholics and Buddhists. Very few adherents of most of these religions remain. By the 1950s, the dominant religion had become Sunni Muslim, and both the government and warring factions have instituted strict adherence in recent years. STEPHENTOW­N HERITAGE CENTER: Art Koepp was born at home on his family’s Burnt Hills farm on January 15, 1918. They moved to his present home, a 100-acre farm on Route 22, when he was nine years old. He has been active in farming all his life. He married his wife Esther when he was 53. He loves his family and his church, and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher most of his adult life. He is never idle and always ready to learn new things, from memorizing poetry to missionary work in Hawaii to stilt walking to moving a house and barn building. GETTING JUSTICE: Philadelph­ia criminal defense lawyers Jim Figorski and Stephen Brown ’71will discuss the themes of injustice and hope through the example of the Shaurn Thomas case in “Getting Justice: A Case History of How to Right a Criminal Wrong One Person at a Time.” Thomas was freed in May 2017after serving 24years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
