Vanderheyden fetes 185 years of service
WYNANTSKILL, N.Y. » Vanderheyden has launched a yearlong celebration of its 185th anniversary of providing safe haven for children and adults.
Among the elements of the celebration of Vanderheyden’s beginnings as the Troy Orphan Asylum in 1933 will be a book of memories and
a fundraising campaign, culminating with a special event in October.
“Our mission to serve this community, its children and families, is the same today as when we were founded in 1833,” said Karen Carpenter Palumbo, president and CEO of Vanderheyden. “Over the course of this next year, we will celebrate all those who came before us, and we now imagine more for the future.”
David Fazioli, senior vice president at Rose & Kiernan Insurance, and Carla Chiaro, president at Renaissance Corp. of Albany, both long-serving members of Vanderheyden’s Board of Directors, will chair the 185th Anniversary Committee. Local attorney E. Stewart Jones will serve as honorary chairman of the campaign, which will help the organization pursue a vision for its future that includes opening a career training center for students and building a Young Adult Independent Living apartment program to help young clients to transition to independent living.
Vanderheyden is searching for alumni and descendants with ties to the organization’s history to share their stories for a book that will be the foundation for the celebration. RPI professor honored with service award
TROY, N.Y. » Tribology expert John Tichy, professor of mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been chosen to receive the Donald Wilcock Distinguished Service Award from the Tribology Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Tichy is just the seventh recipient of the award, established in 1989 to honor “distinguished service to the Tribology Division and the tribology community throughout the recipient’s career.”
“Over the past four decades, Professor Tichy has done outstanding research in tribology, educated countless students and mentored many young faculty members,” said Shekhar Garde, dean of engineering at RPI. “I congratulate him on this special award, which is a fitting recognition of his lifelong contributions and service to the national and international community of mechanical engineers who specialize in tribology.”
Since coming to RPI in 1976, Tichy has focused his research on tribology, the study of the design, friction, wear and lubrication of interacting surfaces, such as bearings or gears. He is a fellow of the ASME and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers. He is a past chairman of the ASME’s Tribology Division and former technical editor of the ASME Journal of Tribology. He has been awarded many honors including the ASME’s Mayo D. Hersey Award for lifetime achievement in tribology, an honorary doctorate from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées and the STLE’s International Prize — that group’s highest honor — and was twice recognized by the ASME for the Best Paper in Tribology.
