Sage women’s basketball drops Elmira 63-54

PINEVALLEY, N.Y. » The Sage Colleges’ women’s basketball team picked up a 63-54 victory over Elmira College on Saturday afternoon to help the Gators to another key league victory. Sage is now 14- 6 overall and 8-3 in the empire 8, while Elmira drops to 11-8 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

Sage led 31-26 at the break and racked up the win as the duo of junior guard Emily Parslow (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonvill­e) and senior forward Genevieve Schoff ( Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) both added 18 points apiece. Schoff added 10 rebounds to go with her 8-16 performanc­e from the floor with a block and an assist, while Parslow added four threepoint­ers with two assists and a steal for the Gators. Sage combined for 47 rebounds, dominating on the boards as Elmira was held to just 32 rebounds.

Junior guard Kaitlyn Bowman (Dannemora, NY/ Saranac) led the team on the boards as she hauled in 14 rebounds and finished with two points and seven assists. Sophomore Megan Flynn (Hoosick Falls, NY/ Hoosick Falls Central) contribute­d eight points and six rebounds for Sage.

Elmira had four players finish in double- digit scoring as Rachel Vespucci added 15 points with eight rebounds. Emily Green added 13 points, while both Lindsey Heaton and Danielle Cleary added 11 points each.

Schoff, last week’s Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, added her 70th career game of scoring in double- digits as well as 30 career double- doubles. She continues to add to her career resume that included 1,346 points ( No. 2) with 841 rebounds (No. 2) and has now played in 102 career games at Sage. She is now No. 2 in career games played and is also second in career blocks with 122. She is 67 points away from becoming Sage’s all-time leading scorer and 150 rebounds off the alltime rebounding record as well.

Parlsow moved into the No. 9 spot in career scoring on Saturday, jumping past Wendy Kuhn (866, 19881992) as she has 872 points. She is also edging closer to the all-time three-point record as she is second with 155 behind the 200 threepoint­ers by Frankie Pearson (2013-2017), while also standing ranking fifth in career assists with 268.

After 22 straight games featuring the same starting lineup, the Great Danes saw a new face among the starters today in Emma List, making her first career start. Mackenzie Trpcicreco­rded a career-high 13 assist, surpassing her previous best of 12 set against Wagner during her freshman year. Féquière scored 16 points through three quarters but was shut out in the fourth. Tiana-Jo Carter recorded one block, bringing her career total to 143, just one behind third place in program history. Trpcic and Canada combined to go a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.

As a team, UAlbany outscored New Hampshire 4236 in the paint, 11-10 in second chance points, 8-2 in fast break points, and 21-9 off the bench. bounds with an assist and a steal.

Ithaca jumped out to an 11-1 lead with seven points coming from Pickell, but RPI scored six straight and 12 of the next 14 points to tie the score at 13-13 late in the first quarter. Martin and Krumbhaar both had four points in the sequence. Yacovoni followed with back-to-back layups for a 17-13 edge, but Ortea made a pair of free throws to end the quarter.

The Bombers extended their lead by five at the end of the half, 32-25, by connecting on 43.8% (14 of 32) of their attempts. Pickell had 10 first half points and Yaconovi scored six with five assists and four steals. Ortea had a teamhigh seven on the other end.

Ithaca opened the third on a 9-2 run for a 14-point lead (41-27), but the Engineers scored four straight and 6 of 7 to get within nine points, 42- 33, with 3:46 to play. The Bombers put up the next six points and eventually held a 50-37 lead after three quarters.

After seeing their deficit reach 19 points (63- 44) midway through the fourth quarter, the Engineers made an 11- 0 run with Elizabeth Eckhardt making a three-pointer, Shaina Iton scoring on a layup and Krumbhaar notching six straight points. RPI trailed by eight (63- 55) with two minutes to play, but could get no closer.

Rensselaer, which is tied for the sixth and final playoff spot, returns to the court on Friday night when they travel to Bard College. Ithaca plays at league-leading RIT, who the Bombers trail by two wins, on Friday. Both games begin at 6 p.m. to eight points, 85-78 with 0:36 left to play. Elmira clawed back into the game and cut the lead to one point with a three-pointer at the buzzer by Jesse Adelson.

Sage shot 56.1% from the floor for the contest, converting 32- of- 57 shots from the floor and holding a commanding edge on the boards, 45-29. The Gators had five different players finish in double- digit scoring as well. Sophomore Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) led the team with his double- double on 19 points and 10 rebounds with four three-pointers.

Joining him in doubledigi­t scoring was sophomore guard Anthony Mitchell ( Bronx, NY/Salesian) with 17 points after making 80% of his shots, converting 8 of 10 field goals with six boards and two steals. Senior guard Wayne Weir (Bronx, NY/Samuel Gompers) chipped in 14 points with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for Sage, junior center Kevin Lenehan ( Delanson, NY/ Duanesburg) and senior Barceem Dukes (Gloversvil­le, NY/Gloversvil­le) each added 12 points.

Elmira’s Henry Cuffee led the contest with 22 points, while Jeremy Every chipped in with 18 points and Adelson finished with 17 points.

Sage will return to action on Tuesday, February 6 hosting Utica College in a 6 p.m. empire 8 contest at Kahl Gym. the Gators, while the team had a .952 combined reception percentage with four errors on 79 attempts. Cecchi led the Gators with his 25.5 points, while Guyton collected 22.5 points in the action.

Sophomore middle hitter Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) added 14 points on 11 kills with a .500 attack percentage and five digs with six block assists.

Rookie setter Ryan Jennings ( North Brunswick, NJ/ North Brunswick) added 34 setting assists in the match with six digs, while junior opposite Austin Laverty (Schenectad­y, NY/ Mohonasen) contribute­d 26 setting assists. Sophomore middle hitter Shane Wenz ( Valatie, NY/ Ichabod Crane) added five kills, three digs with four block assists.

Senior libero Casey Fitzpatric­k ( Haverhill, MA/ Haverhill) another of the nationally ranked Gators this season added 28 digs to lead Sage against Wells. He broke Sage’s career digs mark in the match after surpassing Kyle Ray (693 digs, 2010-2013). He is also climbing the career setting assist mark as he started the day No. 2 on the list.

Wells took the first two sets, 25-23, 25-23 before the Gators took the third and fourth sets, 25-17, 25-22. In the final set, Wells picked up the win beating the Gators, 15-11.

Sage collected the 3- 0 win, beating the Saints, 2522, 25-19, 25-22.

Leading the way for the Gators was Guyton with 17 kills, two aces, three digs, two block assists and 20.0 points. He had a .500 attack percentage in the contest as well. Guyton is Sage’s career ace leader with 171 aces, and is now No. 3 in kills (939), and No. 2 in points as he has 1,192.0 points just on the heels of the all-time point leader, Dylan Krowicki ( 1,212.5 points).

Cecchi added seven kills with two aces, nine digs and 9.0 points, elevating his career resume as well. He is second on the all-time kills list with 955 kills, while standing second in aces (104) and third in points (1,118.5 points).

Fitzpatric­k picked up five setting assists with a teambest nine digs and continues to add to his new active mark as Sages’ career digs leader. He has 718 digs to go with his 1,373 career setting assists which is second at Sage. Laverty chipped in with 15 setting assists, two kills, and six digs for Sage as they combined for a .277 attack percentage.
