Taconic Biosciences cuts ribbon at headquarters
EASTGREENBUSH, N.Y. » Community leaders welcomed lab animal company Taconic Biosciences to its new local headquarters on Friday at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Founded in 1949, Taconic Biosciences is a breeder and supplier of laboratory animals, producing selectively bred and genetically engineered mice and rats for research use.
The biotechnology company’s mission is to create a difference in human health by providing the best, most relevant mouse and rat models to researchers in the life science community.
Late last year, the company relocated its headquarters from Hudson to East Greenbush, at 1 Discovery Dr., right off of Columbia Turnpike in the University at Albany Health Sciences Campus. In addition to its main offices — where the company’s leadership team, as well as members of its product strategy, marketing, human resources, finance, quality, customer service and business technology teams all work — the company has a lab and an animal facility nearby.
Taconic Biosciences CEO Bob Rosenthal said the company’s main reason for moving was to be closer to talent in the Capital Region.
“As will all changes that happen over a company’s lifetime, the movement of Taconic Biosciences headquarters to Rensselaer represents a opportunity,” he said during the ceremony, “an opportunity to tap into a larger talent pool, an opportunity to tap into a greater scientific community and an opportunity to expand on Taconic’s strong history within the biomedical industry.”
Since operating from its new location, Rosenthal said Taconic Biosciences has already seen a positive impact from the change, and are grateful to those in the community for helping to make the move successful.
This move relocated 35 jobs to the area, and the new location is 45 miles from its primary operations facility in Germantown.
Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin, East Greenbush Town Supervisor Jack Conway, Rensselaer County Legisla- tor — and representative for state Sen. Kathleen Marchione — Dan Casale, Rensselaer County Legislator Tom Grant and Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce President Kate Manley all welcomed Taconic Biosciences during Friday’s event.
“We just want to welcome Taconic here. Anytime we’re seeing business grow we love it,” McLaughlin said. “We’re just thrilled that you’re here and with you nothing but success. This corridor is due for some great growth, so to see these businesses getting added is fantastic. We wish you nothing but the best.”
Conway added, “We’re very happy to have you here. There’s so much progressive, cutting edge scientific technology coming to Discovery Drive and to East Greenbush, so on behalf of the town I want to welcome Taconic Biosciences.” Echoing the county executive, he added, “This corridor is due for great things and this is indeed a great thing.”
