Active shooter training exercise set for Friday

TROY, N.Y. » Local first responders and school officials from the Troy City School District will take part in a full-scale active shooter training exercise on Friday.

The drill will take place at Troy High School, located at 1950 Burdett Ave., from 8 a.m. to noon. District officials said this drill will in- clude response from local, county and state emergency service agencies. The training exercise will not include any students since the district will be closed for a profession­al developmen­t day, although staff will take members part in fromthe the exercise. high school Districts officials are warning residents and motorists they may notice a large amount of law en- forcement and emergency vehicles during the exercise, which may include ambulances, fire trucks, police cars andmore on campus property and in the surroundin­g area.

Officials also noted Burdett Avenue will be closed between Sage Avenue and Tibbitts Avenue from 8 a.m. to noon and there will be no public access to school grounds during the exercise. Signs will be posted in advance of the exercise.

The drill serves as training for the school district, as well as law enforcemen­t and emergency services, and will be as realistic as possible, according to district officials.

According to a news release from the district, the drill is the culminatio­n of more than eight months of planning.

The drill will be a collaborat­ive exercise with Troy City School Dis- trict, Questar III BOCES, Troy Police Department, Troy Fire Department, Rensselaer County Sheriff, New York State Police, New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety, Samaritan Hospital/St. Peter’s Health Partners, Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute as well as other local and out- of-county law enforcemen­t agencies.
