Resorts host spring events

You know we are well into the current ski/ride season when ski resorts begin announcing spring events and also selling next season passes and lift ticket. As an added incentive, several resorts let skiers/ riders finish out the 2016-17 season with the purchase of 2018-19 season passes.

Kailey Wolin, group sales/ marketing and events coordinato­r at West Mountain in Queensbury, N. Y., says West will “Hold their annual Slush Cup Cardboard derby event, this Sunday, March 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We kick off with a ‘ fun’ Giant Slalom race on the Face slope starting at 9:30 a.m. The Cardboard Sled derby will take place at noon followed by the Slush Cup, pond skimming competitio­n at 1:00 p.m.

Wolin adds that the “West Mountain Fun GS race is open to the public for participan­ts six years of age or older. Cost is $25 per racer and includes the Cardboard Sled Derby and Slush Cup fees.”

According to Kailey there will be a raffle and silent auction in the Main Lodge through the day, with proceeds to benefit the West Mountain School, a 501 ©

non-profit.

Doctor Zdenek Frank Zobal, 83, a longtime member of The Out of Control Ski Club, died peacefully March 5 while on a OC ski trip in Meribel-Mot tar et, France. Referred toby club members as “ZZ”. It was his 77th year of skiing. There will be a memorial for him, to- morrow, March 23 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Schenectad­y, N. Y. O. C. Club members will meet Saturday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the top of Stratton Mountain’s Showcase ski run where a brief memorial will also be held for ZZ.

Final plans are in the works for the annual New York Capital District Ski Council banquet. Check with your ski club Council rep for time and place.
