Five Questions with Judy Gold: This Emmy award-winning comedienne will perform this weekend in the Spa City. Her shows are at 7:30and 9:30p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Comedy Works, located at 388 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs
1How is life treating you lately?
Well, I’m agitated every single time I pick up a newspaper or watch the news. So, I’m trying to do salvage some brain-free time during the day so that my blood pressure remains normal.
2Where are you from? I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, two blocks from where my mother grew up. I grew up in New Jersey.
3Have you ever been to Saratoga Springs before?
I have been to Saratoga Springs a couple of times and I love it! I have performed at The Mansion, which is an amazingly beautiful B&B with outstanding food. I love the restaurants and tiny shops on and around Broadway. I love the history. It’s a great and fun place to visit.
4I read in your bio you’ve done Shakespeare in the Park. We also have that here in Saratoga Springs. What’s your favorite Shakespeare work? Since I haven’t read every single work of Shakespeare’s, I cannot give you a well-educated answer. The thing I love most about his plays is that they are as relevant now as they were when they were written. The plots and themes have stood the test of time and they are wildly subversive to this day. Last summer there were protestors at The Public Theater’s production of Julius Caesar at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. Julius Caesar was written over 400years ago. The theater is a powerful medium.
5You have an impressive list of accomplishments in your career in TV, theater, podcasts and stand up - what’s next? The best thing about this business is also the worst thing about this business - you never know for sure what’s next. Your life can change overnight. I am currently writing a new solo show, doing a reading of a new play that I’m really excited to be a part of, and I am going to be recording a stand-up album in the next couple of months. Of course, I will be performing standup in regularly in NYC as well as all over the country.
