On Sunday May 6, graduate students from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Department of the Arts will present their annual exhibition -- entitled “PLEASE. PEOPLE. ALL ABOUT BEEKEEPING: Depictions of humans collecting honey from wild bees date to 15,000years ago. Around 4500years ago, efforts to domesticate them were found in Egyptian tombs of the pharaohs such as Tutankhamun. It wasn’t until the 18th century that understanding of the colonies and biology of bees allowed the construction of the moveable comb hive so that honey could be harvested without destroying the entire colony. Tom Slavin talks on the history of beekeeping at Sand Lake Town Hall on May 10at 7 p.m. as part of Rensselaer Plataeu Alliance’s 2nd Thursday Lecture Series. Donation $5. In partnership with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Peebles Island State Park will host a presentation on the Eagles of New York on Saturday, May 12, from 2:30p.m. – 4 pm.. The presentation, led by DEC wildlife technician Scott VanArsdale, is geared towards older children and adults. Participants will learn about the history of DEC’s reintroduction program and the lives of eagles throughout the year. Scott will share some stories from his 25years of work with eagles. After the program, there will be a short moderate hike (about 1mile roundtrip) to view an active eagle nest, weather permitting. Please bring binoculars if you have them. GEORGI PLANT SALE:
The Georgi Plant Sale takes place on May 12from 9a.m. – noon. Members are granted early access at 8:30a.m. Vendors are invited at $20 per space. Indoor spaces are limited and will be offered on a first come/first serve basis. Outdoor locations are available as well. The sale will include items from the Georgi gardens, annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets. Donations of plants welcomed, drop off at Community Room on May 10-11. The Georgi on the Battenkill is is owned and operated by the Town of Salem and located at 28 Adams Lane, Shushan. HYDE HALL: You are invited to The Hyde Hall Celebrate Mom! Garden Party from noon – 3p.m. on May 12. Enjoy Tea and treats in the Library and on the Veranda, view the newly restored Dining Room walls and carpet. LATIN CONFIRMATION: A Latin Confirmation according to the Old Rite will take place on May 12at 2p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 4163rd Street in Troy. This is only the third time that this rite will have been celebrated in the diocese of Albany since the liturgical reforms in the Catholic Church which occurred in the 1970s. Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger will preside. The public is invited to witness this sacrament in Latin, as it was offered for hundreds of years. MURDER AT OAKWOOD:
