HAITI PRESENTATION: How did Haiti, once France’s greatest source of wealth, come to be perceived by our current President as a place worthy of the dung-hill of humanity? Are pre-Civil War U.S. perceptions of the Haitian quest for freedom still with us today? UAlbany professor Eloise A. Brière offers a look at Haiti’s past and present, from how the only place in the world to mount a successful slave revolution created an independent nation-state, to how most of the money pledged to help Haiti rebuild after the 2010 earthquake went to United Nations agencies and NGOs, often never leaving donor governments.
